In that time the best car was an Alfa Romeo.

The first Grand Prix was in 1906. The first F1 race was in 1946. The first Grand Prix which was part of the World Driver's Championship was this one. The first Formula One race was technically the 1981 Argentine Grand Prix, since the trademark was not registered in the UK until April 2nd of that year. But since the cars and rules were the same, that can be backdated to the first race of 1981 so I can let you off there.
