Estriol has exciting potential as a drug therapy for autoimmune diseases | Felice Gersh, MD

The most exciting use for estriol is as an immunomodulator. It's been studied as a promising therapy for multiple sclerosis and other autoimmune diseases because it downregulates the immune system, which can lead to a decrease or even remission of symptoms.

Estriol is the dominant estrogen of pregnant women, where it prevents the woman's immune system from attacking the fetus. Many women with autoimmune diseases find that their symptoms are much better during pregnancy due to this down regulation. But a related side effect is that pregnant women are much more susceptible to diseases.

For women in menopause who are not not battling an autoimmune disease, we do not want to downregulate their immune systems. Women in menopause want a healthy, robust, fully functional immune system.

This is why I am excited about estriol's potential as a pharmaceutical therapy for autoimmune diseases, but I never recommend it as part of menopausal hormone replacement therapy.

This is exciting news 😀
I have autoimmune conditions with inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction, and I can say that my muscle and joint pain has reduced since starting HRT. I use the estriol part only for v atrophy at the moment, plus E2 patches, progesterone and a little bit of T. Looking forward to hearing much more about the use of estriol as a drug. Thank you 😊xx

Have also look through the study that shows Estriol is good in applications on the gums to prevent parodontit.

could you take it along with normal estradiol patches, I tried all MS drugs with huge side effects and currently take nothing

I have heard about Estriol treating MS, Lupus and fibromyalgia. In fact; Ive heard that DHEA, Estriol, Progesterone and Testosterone can relieve symptoms in all these diseases.

One question though. Ive heard Bi-est with normal HRT that they give women can be counterproductive as Estriol isnt normally high except during pregnancy which menopausal women dont get. Maybe this is because Estriol needs high levels of progesterone? or is it just a bad idea to give bi-est standardly as HRT?

I have heard women getting hot flashes on Bi-Est but not when just given Estradiol
