Taiwan''s foreign minister Joseph Wu stated on Wednesday that there are no plans to change the name of Taiwan''s representative office in Lithuania. Earlier this week, a report had claimed that Washington had asked Lithuania to change the name of the Taiwanese Representative Office. Yet another report said Lithuania was considering changing the Chinese name of the de facto embassy from "Taiwanese" to "Taiwanese people," in order to ease tensions with China. Let''s hear from the foreign minister.

Joseph Wu
Foreign minister
Lithuania did not come to us to say that we have to change the name of our representative office. In fact, we’ve received many important persons from Lithuania. They all said they’re very firm on their stance, and that they should seek more opportunities to collaborate with Taiwan. They also hope to gain support from the U.S. and European countries. That’s their current policy. So with regards to the name change, it’s false information.

Last November, Taiwan opened a representative office in Lithuania under its own name, making it Taiwan''s first de facto embassy under its own name in Europe. Since opening, China has imposed a series of diplomatic and economic sanctions on Lithuania. And previously, Lithuania''s president had voiced concern in a radio interview that the office''s name had been "a mistake."

They should change it to something more straightforward like "Taiwan doesn't belong to the CCP Representative Office" or better yet "Taiwanese Embassy"

First in Europe? Not quite. The Republic of China's Embassy to the Holy See uses the country's official name.
