Wet cough is also called a productive cough that produces mucus or phlegm. There is another type of cough called Dry cough. The treatment modalities for dry cough and productive cough are different.

Remember, coughing is nothing but a reflex or defense mechanism that helps protect your body from irritants, like dust in the air.

Here are some natural or home remedies and medicines for a productive cough.

Steam inhalation:

Steam can help break down mucus causing a chesty cough and help you to cough it up.

Use a room vaporiser, or sit with your head over a bowl of hot water and a towel over your head to inhale steam.

Honey for cough:

Natural bee’s honey is one of the most effective ways of treating a wet cough. It has antibacterial properties and acts as a wound healer. Honey reduces pain and inflammation

You can mix honey with tea or warm lemon water. It is helpful in healing sore throats.

Don't give honey to a child under 1-year-old. It can cause a rare complication called infant botulism or Floppy baby syndrome.

Humidifier to reduce cough:

A humidifier can help you avoid breathing in dry air. This is particularly helpful at night when the throat naturally dries out. A dry throat may be more prone to irritation and inflammation.

Phlegm in the respiratory tract becomes thinner and easier to move out of the lungs.

Steamy shower in cough:

Taking a steamy shower can help moisten your upper airways. It may also help break up the mucus in your chest. Try to stay in the shower or in a steamy bathroom for at least 5 minutes. You can repeat this process as needed.

Ginger tea for cough:

Ginger is packed with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, according to studies a few cups of ginger tea per day may help soothe inflammation in your throat while keeping you hydrated.

Thyme and clove tea for cough:

Research shows that both thyme and clove have antimicrobial properties. They may help your body fight off an upper respiratory infection.
Add fresh thyme and clove leaves to boiling water. Allow to boil for 10 minutes. Then strain and serve.

Nasal irrigation or neti pot:

A neti pot is a convenient way of performing nasal irrigation with saline water. Research shows that nasal irrigation is good for more than just a stuffy nose. It can reduce the symptoms of wet cough in both children and adults. It can also soothe sore throats.

For nasal irrigation, be sure to use filtered water rather than tap water, which may contain harmful bacteria.

Hydration:

Staying hydrated and avoiding dehydration is extremely important when you’re fighting off an infection. It also keeps your throat from drying out and becoming irritated or inflamed. Aim to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day.

Salt water gargle for sore throat:

If you have a wet cough with sore throat then you can consider warm Salt water gargle.

Gargling with warm salt water is one of the simplest and most effective home remedies.
The salt here pulls out the mucus from your swollen and inflamed tissue.
Salt water gargling helps to relieve the discomfort and scratchy throat.

Medicines to treat cough

Medicines that can be used to treat productive coughs include expectorants and mucolytics.

Expectorants are substances that help to loosen and expel mucus from the lungs. They include guaifenesin, ammonia, senega, sodium citrate and ipecacuanha.

Mucolytics, such as bromhexine and acetylcysteine, help break down thick, sticky chest phlegm, making it easier to cough up.

This is helpful. Keeping a note of remedies. Also sometimes wet cough leads to congestion and blockage. Steaming helps relieving that congestion. I use pure Euclayptus oil from Anveya while steaming and it works wonders.

Hear me out. Had a wet cough for 3 weeks and considered steroids and antibiotics. Before I made an appointment - I tried the honey, ginger, lemon and black pepper. You boil water and add ginger and lemon- let it boil. In your cup add 2 tablespoon of honey and black pepper. Add your boiled mixture to the cup and drink it.

I couldn't believe how much it helped. Especially as I paid a lot of money for cough mixtures and nothing worked.

It was a really nice and useful video. Apart from these home remedies, drinking mulethi tea or gargling with it can also help thin the mucus in the throat. Also, vasa is another herb which can help thin the mucus. It is a common ingredient present in many ayurvedic cough syrups. You can also add some essential oils to your steam inhaler or humidifier to improve its efficacy.
