I am a C1 user for many years and was disappointed they recently they announced and kind of forcing us to move to subscription module. The only reason I switched from LR to C1 was to avoid the subscription module. Your video is excellent and have made my decision to move back to LR easy. Thank you for the great unbias video and really appreciate for putting something like this.

This is a great review and mirrors much of my own thinking. I've used Lightroom for years now and have frankly grown tired of it's instability, inconsistency with cloud sync, lack of parity between LRC and LRCC, and slowness. I have over 6TB of files, LR only allows up to 1TB for cloud sync, so I have a complicated workflow of starting imports in LRCC then archiving to LRC. However LRC does not play well syncing originals from LRCC. I've been trying to import 6TB of files into C1 and well it's been a week and previews are still building. That said the AI masking in LR is light years ahead of C1, and when it works, the fact that I can edit on my iPad, and those edits are synced to my desktop and laptop is amazing. C1 has built-in Leica profiles that I thought were better than LR, until I realized the sharpness and noise reduction were turned up, and I can get the same look from LR by doing the same. I do like the flexibility of the color editing, but I can still get the same final result in LR. I think much of the mindshare around C1 is due to Capture One sponsoring Youtubers. LRC has had tethering for many years and it works fine. C1 has advantages in wireless tethering and crating separate "sessions", but I wouldn't say the actual process is night and day from LRC. End the end, I'll probably just stay with LR as it's overall advantages in 2023 outweigh the few that C1 has.

There is a pretty easy Answers to all this! People see Color, Contrast and artifacts differently Some see it more than others!
Then If There is no Problem at all with the demosaicing process (Adaptive Homogeneity-Directed (AHD) ) in Lightroom (I don't know that C1 is using),
For FujiFilm camera and Sony Camers then they would never Develop the "Enhance Details" for demosaicing process If everything was fine. .. But you can set the "Details" slider in the sharpenig Tab to "0" and you will get less artifacts in most Raw files. sharaping has always been bad in LR/ACR i Feel like. i Use Both C1 an LR.. GREAT VIDEO BTW! 👍🤓

The recent subscription changes are crazy, but of all the arguments, I don't think the price is a big factor - they are both expensive products anyway - I've used the same version of Capture One for years and only had to upgrade when I switched to an M1 Mac, and I suspect what most people will do is to buy once and then update when they need, so the only real difference is if one really needs the latest updates all the time or not. I suppose Adobe doesn't roll out new features every month so I think the most interesting question is what gives you the best quality given your workflow, i.e. if you need the super advanced colour editing of Capture One and use Affinity for editing, or if you are happier with the Adobe ecosystem.

I switched from LR about three years ago, due to the import module and the library organization. At that time, it was a pain to import and separate the files in LR. And in my workflow, where I need to tag, filter and separate the image of several subjects of each session, it would cost me a lot of time. When I first used C1 it was like a breeze to do that. Its module has been updated and, besides not knowing how's in LR, I think that it's almost impossible to beat C1 in this matter. I loved the addition that Adobe put on the masking using AI. And the would be the only thing that still makes me think about turning back to LR, but the library, for now, it's more important to me.

Thanks, i start use LR for while and i like it, i thought about C1 after adobe last update agreement that breach privacy, but after seeing your video and other videos about LR alternative, each app have its pros and cons and since adobe is more cheaper and i get used to work with it, i decide to stuck with it

Maybe it's just me, but I find Capture One Express (completely free) does a WAY better job of matching the Fuji film simulations. You can compare a JPEG from the camera to a C1 RAW file and a Lightroom RAW file (both using the same Fuji profile), and the C1 RAW will be far closer. It gives a much better starting point similar to what you saw on the back of the camera.

Capture One also recovers highlights better for me and skin tones have a more pleasing pop. Perhaps it's possible to achieve similar results in Lightroom but it seems to require infinitely more fussing around (and this is coming from someone that has used Lightroom for a decade before trying C1).

I was very disappointed with C1’s lack of masking innovation in this latest release. I was anticipating something bigger than styles and smart adjustments.

If you own a Fuji XH2 or XT5 with that new 40mp sensor, Capture One is way better at RAW processing. Don't know why, but it is. I've done the testing. Way more detail in finished jpeg. However, with the 26mp sensors from Fuji, they aren't that discernible from LrC jpegs. Weird.

Thank you so much….I just bought the new Fuji xh2 and already have a Lightroom/photoshop subscription(the $10/month which is a bargain) thinking I was gonna have to buy another program just to process my raw files after watching so many YouTubers saying Lightroom was terrible for Fuji.

My only problem with Lr& & Adobe in general: without the competition from ON1, DxO, CO1... where would Lr and PS be, what pace their development speed, what costumer satisfaction road, what price?.... just my 2 cents.

Your very last closing comment is so pertinent : about C1 being arrogant and not as accessible. Indeed ... I switched to C1 in 2017 when I bought my first Fuji camera (and love the results). I must say I *do* enjoy editing in Capture One but their pricing model and 'bang for buck' might need adjusting

Appreciate your preface conclusion on the merits of both these apps.

I’m a long term C1 user but rather disgusted by their licensing approach since I tried to update a minor patch and they wanted more :(

So keen to try lightroom and this is encouraging.

Many thanks 🙏

switching going back to lightroom- from using 3 years of C.One- my new camera sony a7r5 RAW files are not supported by capture one perpetual license -I have had no customer suport from CO

I don’t know about Fuji, I never had it, but for Nikon, C1 gives better demosaic, color, and in general shows raw better than LR.

Why You didn't mention a word, about C1 one of best features, which is: linear response film curve (where You have access to all DR from Your sensor), and luma curve??

I bought C1 21 on a perpetual license to avoid the subscription scam of LR. Then they went all in on the subscription scene, but in a dishonest way. They not only ceased offering updates to perpetual licensees, but they made it so that it will not work on any Mac updates. So my C1 no longer works at all. I’m going to LR.

i did the same thing, same Fuji file in LR and C1, and in C1 even with Noise reduction on 0 and sharpening on FULL, different radius settings... and didnt get the worm effect, on LR, as soon as i leave the standard value it shoes! on C1 the only thing i got was the Halo effect that is normal on over sharpened images. Another point is that you are simply assuming that sliders with same name work the same way in different softwares... not considering the way both programs map highlights, shadows and stuff... if you want to reach the EXACT same result in both programs you cant expect to use the exact same sliders about the exact same way and "boom" its done. that said, for me is way easier to get a really good result on Fuji files on C1

Great video, Gavin, and your products are fantastic. I am a fuji user who switched to c1 from LR a few years back because of the alleged worms issue. I would love to switch back to LR. Do you have any advice on what the settings should be (noise reduction, etc) to approximate a c1 raw conversion in LR? I also hear that some people have good experiences using x-transformer. I’m already paying for photoshop and have access to LR, so why keep paying extra for C1 if I don’t have to, especially since LR has so many advantages now?
