I'm an Aspie, and I'm 60 yrs old. I don't do well with change, and when they stopped using Aspergers, it felt like I had been kicked out of my own house... still feels that way, actually.

As someone who did manage to get diagnosed with Level 2 ASD, let me tell you, it's a very surreal experience to receive that diagnosis if you weren't already aware of the system. Those shrinks diagnosed me with Autism 2: Electric Boogaloo, and now I have to take antipsychotics about it

lmao, so that's why my psychiatrist wrote that down on the report she wrote for my lawyer. I can't even imagine what autism level 3 must be like. The person is probably born with the instinctive knowledge of all the names of every single locomotive ever built.

This is so true. Our youngest son was diagnosed with mild autism at age 3, and the neurologist told us there was no more Asperger’s and it’s now Level 1. It goes up to Level 3 being the most restrictive in ability and people who probably won’t live independently. She also said there would be limited resources and therapy for Level 1 and she as right!

I still use mild autism. I agree we should not call it Aspergers, because of the whole Col. Aspergers was was a Nazi doctor who was sending autistic people to concentration camps thing, but I don't think calling it autistim or autistm level 1 is helpful. I work in a neurodiverse service, as a neurodiverse person who happens to work with people who are more severly autistic than I am, and my condition is not the same as their condition. I don't mean that to be mean, but my needs are very different from their needs, though there is some overlap, and not having proper distinct labels make it hard for people to get the assistance for their needs that they need.

Wonder how he feels about "being on the Spectrum" replacing all the descriptions?

Me: "I deal with Asperger's so please, if I miss some cues, be patient and let me know."

Woman: "It's not called that anymore"

Me: "It's not called missing social cues?"

Woman: "No, it's not called "Asperger's anymore"

Me: "When did that change?"

Woman: "Years ago!"

Me: "You'd think someone might tell me?"

Woman: " Didn't your therapist tell you?"

Me: "Why do I need a therapist?"

Woman: "Um, well, to help you!"

Me: Trust me, gurl, I"m way past help."

People in the medical field still largely refer to "mild autism" as asperger's.
They fused the asperger's diagnosis into the autism diagnosis because it made sense, not because people were offended.
People need to stop making people up to get mad at.

As a neurodivergentwoman with purple hair 💜 i take no offense to that

Yea I will always have aspergers Not sure why it was deemed offensive for me.
Then they didn't like the term high-functioning, either. Honestly, calling me autistic feels like the biggest insult

You're lucky you had someone who updated you when the diagnosis changed. They never told my ass.

Asperger’s isn’t considered offensive it’s just outdated. No one is bullying you

Psychology tends to attract people with a lot of weird issues themselves so it's not really a surprise they would do something that rude, intentionally or not.

ngl i don't understand other autistic people making such a big deal about the name change as if it just happened yesterday (it was removed over a decade ago). especially so when it was changed because asperger was the nazi doctor who decided if you were autistic enough to be killed instead of put to work doing hard labor. like is that really the biggest thing we have to worry about in the community? having your condition be named after the nazi who decided that you weren't autistic enough to be killed about it? kind of a spit in the face to those of us beyond that cutoff ngl

My best friend in college found out she had Asperger’s a couple years after we graduated. Everyone thought she was weird but I thought she was the most normal person I’d ever met in my life. Not sure what that says about me.

I thought we didn’t use the Asperger’s term anymore because the man himself colluded with Nazis

My husband introduced his autism as Asperger's, and I didn't know it was offensive until I looked into it more and YouTube told me it was, but wouldn't tell me what _wasn't._ So, I thought "that's ironic" 😅
