The Difference Between High Functioning Autism and Aspergers

An educational video about high functioning autism and aspergers syndrome featuring child pyschologist Allison Kawa. Allison explains that when a child reaches 8 to 9 years of age it becomes very difficult to point out substantial differences between the labels of high functioning autism and aspergers syndrome. She goes on to say that a part of autism that differs from aspergers syndrome is the language component. Most children diagnosed with autism have trouble with certain speech or language skills. However, with high fucntioning autism those language barriers are typically worked out through therapy or other means by the time the child is 8 or 9 leaving very little of any definition difference between high functioning autism and aspergers syndrome.

Diagnostically there is no difference. But in general those with Aspergers are more awkward while those with HFA are more aloof

Thanks for the informative information. I have a niece. Who is only 20 months old. She’s been diagnosed with high functional autism. Ended receiving speech therapy. She’s a real adorable little girl. Such a sweet baby girl. And so precious indeed. Her mother is definitely seeking out the right help for her daughter. And her mom is actually my niece as well. So the adorable little baby and speaking of, who has high functioning autism. Is my great niece. we want the best for our little adorable one. She’s such a precious one. 0:59

I was told a I am high functioning autistic I was very smart in reading n spelling n science but had speech problem n learning compression especially reading people

There are no clinical differences between HFA and Asperger's, any differences noted here are aspects that have been observed in both conditions. It is not the conditions that are different, it is the different manifestations in different people
