The definitive final cut. Restored and back on the big screen from 2 August. At BFI Southbank and selected cinemas nationwide.

A touching tale of love, loss, landscape and the hardscrabble existence of America's working poor. Set against the bloody backdrop of the Johnson County War at the end of the 19th Century, this is a fraught love story between rogue Federal Marshal Averill (Kris Kristofferson), local madam Ella (Isabelle Huppert) and association mercenary Nate (Christopher Walken). With Vilmos Zsigmond's spectacular cinematography of dustfilled,
snow-peaked landscapes, Cimino brings together all the ingredients for a Western epic.

One of the most controversial films in Hollywood history, it divided critics and the public alike on its initial release in 1981. Over the last decade Heaven's Gate has been broadly reassessed, with many citing it as one of the key films of its period. This stunning restoration was overseen by the director.

Saw it in New York in 70MM. The audience gave it a standing ovation. A great movie that schould be seen now in America.

Saw it when it came out. It is a MAGNIFICENT movie. I wish everyone could see it on the big screen ... the cinematography is unreal.  It is stunning and you will never take your life in America for granted ever again. There was a lot of movie politics going on that brought the movie down. It's quite long and people weren't use to seeing long movies as 1980 was a different time. Cimino was seen as too ambitious and not a "team" player. It was a success in Europe and  won awards there. They also consider it one of the best westerns ever made and I agree. Just watch it THEN comment.

The Criterion cut of this movie is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. I think it was ahead of its time, and judged for its epically tumultuous production rather than its content.

HOLY CRAP! I CAN SEE COLORS! I've only seen the sepia tone cut which was the one on dvd. I liked that version enough, but these visuals… wow.

Heaven's Gate: The epic Western that almost destroyed Hollywood. Cimino's 5-hour masterpiece was a gamble that didn't pay off, but its legacy is undeniable. A tale of greed, power, and the American West, this film is a must-watch for any cinephile. Have you seen it? What did you think? #heavensgate #michaelcimino #western #cinema #cultclassic

I have never watched this movie and now plan to. It appears that Taylor Sheridan probably drew inspiration from this movie when making the Yellowstone prequels 1883 and 1923.

Just watched it on the 70’-80’-90’ channel tonight, I have to say I am a lucky person to have witnessed this masterpiece of American film history. Yes it is a slow paced long epic movie, but oh my goodness the art direction, cinematography was full of details, every single scene was a beautiful painting. It’s a shame that the critics didn’t get it back in those days, but does not deduct the film itself a single inch, as well as Mr Cimino’s talent…a 9 out of 10 ⭐

A great film totally destroyed ( in reputation) by critics bought to lambaste it before even seeing it! Cimino is not my favorite director but this and Deer Hunter are great and both films became victims of politics instead of being seen as works of art.

I've never seen it but it appears to be one of the last great epics. We don't make movies this ambitious, on this scale anymore. They're just more expensive than they're profitable.

This film is like a train. It starts off very slow, but its pacing gets a little bit better as it goes on.
