Being shy and an introvert is a suffer. Especially in an extroverted community

Shy introverts: signature look of superiority

I often feel like I am a shy extrovert. I am generally pretty outgoing and enjoy being in lively groups. But I do have a lot of anxieties about being judged, and specific sorts of one-on-one interactions, such as asking a stranger for help, make me really nervous and uncomfortable. For example, I could be at a big party at a restaurant having a lot of fun but still be too timid to tell the waiter she gave me the wrong food.

My manager always comments about how I get along well and talk a lot with colleagues, and I always have to remind him, "It's not that I can't socialise. It's that I don't feel the need to, and I prefer space and quiet." I CAN be shy, depending on if I don't really know someone or feel comfortable with them (and if I'm not fully comfortable with someone, I often never will be - it's that intuition coming in!), but then there are also people who I can instantly talk to comfortably. I was painfully shy as a kid but not anymore. However, I have always been and will always be an introvert.

Coming from an INFJ in her late 20s, I used to be an extreme shy introvert which is why I barely made any friends in school and sadly never kept in contact with any of them. Now, I am just an introvert. I have no problem addressing people, specially since I am in the academic field and always in contact with new students, parents and colleagues. Too much extroverted energy does make me shut down a bit. However, I came over the fear of "shyness" and I can just go to movies alone, sit in a cafe by myself with my phone and just enjoy my alone time without the fear of judgement, anxiety or society's pressure. Still, my friends circle is pretty tight with just 3 to 4 people who I am close with given my INFJ nature.

i'm an introvert cuz i hate social interactions and it makes me tired and when i'm alone i'm more productive, and i'm shy cuz i'm afraid of what other people think about me and i don't like people judging me
so yeah, i'm an introverted shy :D

As a chatty introvert that almost never really had problems with shyness, thank you so much for stating this 🙌

In short, shyness is a manifestation of anxiety/fear and CAN be treated. Being an introvert is not a diagnosis/symptom and does NOT need to be treated. I really dislike when people think being introvert is a problem. Extreme shyness and social anxiety kinda are, but if you think about it, there really are legitimate things to be embarrassed about so as not to provoke conflict, be it political or on the level of accepting a video tide pods challenge.

I’m not shy. Introverted yes, but as an ISTP I couldn’t give a flying f*** about what other people think of me.

THANK you for this! The amount of times people who are just shy say they're introverted, when they are obviously extroverted, is uncountable. Being an introvert is all the rage nowadays. 😆

Honestly one of my pet peeves is when people refer to me or someone else as shy. I have no problem talking to strangers or striking up a conversation with someone, but I won't say a lot unless I feel like it's worth saying. There is a difference between quiet and shy!!

The amount of time I get people telling me, “you’re an introvert, but you’re not shy” I’m talkative, friendly, but I don’t like being around people too long cause I get tired quickly

Growing up I was both – she and introverted. But my parents didn't understand what introverted meant so they assumed I was just shy. I'm 28 now and have overcome a lot of fear. I am much more confident but definitely an introvert.

True, my parents are both introverts but aren't shy. Age definitely helps you care less about what other people think:)

I always hated when I was younger and my family said I was shy. I'm not shy. I just don't want to talk to you... it's nothing personal.

The problem with exposure therapy is that if the events that transpire reaffirm your phobia, that's not going to be helpful. Sometimes social interaction just kind of sucks.
I dunno. I guess it works most of the time.

I'm definitely introverted, but I feel that my shyness makes me even more so
