I've been doing this for 50+ years and it never even occurred to me to try and not get oil on my hands! It's part of the experience of changing my oil... it wouldn't be the same if my hands didn't get oily. Of course, I save my old newspapers to wipe my hands so I don't have to waste paper towels.

A vacuum in the filler neck and not a drop will fall with the plug removed until you turn off or remove the vacuum.

I bought one those magnetic drain plug removal tools, spring mounted magnet with handle. Works great, best tool purchase in the last ten years.

There is still a chance that the oil will fall on your hand if you are not quick. You can use a flat wrench because you will throw the screw into the oil anyway so when you remove it you will get dirty anyway xD But the oil that starts to flow which should be hot will not flow on your hand. The trick to not lose the screw is to use a ratchet with a socket. Or even better method is to unscrew the screw with your fingers, but then you need to have skills lol

Apply a little vacuum to the oil inlet with your shop vac.

Have a old t-shirt rag handy no problems wipe hand clean oil filter always is worse than plug

Ok I knew this one but ended up getting one of the fancy no tool needed drain plug. For a car that I rarely drive but I change the oil twice a year.
