we are in va just off 301 before MD. we buildt 2 pine cabins for storing lumber. so far( 3 to 4 years) we have had not to much of a issue. but the biggest issue bug it the small black and with hornets. we spray all our rough cut lumber with timber boar and the seems to help a lot.

Pine is definitely the most underrated.

Built one log cabin 22’X20’ 10” milled square yellow pine, dove tail, looks great with clear stain. Now building a 48’X24’ out of 12” D-log spruce.
Use diatomaceous earth to keep the ants and bugs out.

I just bought ten acres in east texas filled with 8" logs super tall and straight. I'm definitely going to build a log home on it. So much cheaper.

In New Zealand the majority of our commercial forestry is Pinus Radiata ( Monterey Pine ) without pressure treatment it rots incredibly fast, we also have a native beetle called a Huhu, their grubs are about the size of your thumb and they eat soft wet pine very fast. I assume all pine species are similar with rotting. We use a lot of Macrocarpa for outdoor furniture, if off the ground it will last for many years.

Hey Noah, I also live in central Virginia and am currently building my first log cabin using only materials on my property. I'm learning as I go. I'm also using yellow pines. If you're running between cville and Richmond on 64 I'm about halfway between the two and would love your input and advice on my build

"Pine" here in Pennsylvania is mostly white pine, which is used as interior walls. We have red pine and jack pine, but it is terrible to work with. I have never seen anyone use it in any sort of building.

The loblolly and slash pine is nowhere close to the quality of long leaf yellow pine! Very little long leaf left in the South.

Glad to see the this Tree is good wood for cabin building. Its so easy to work with. I've made strong good looking cord from its green fibrous bark.
These grow faster than ant than anything else useful as well. If I decide to stay in the states and buy land, I will want many of these to build with. Im just dont trust the US. They'll frack my water, strip the tops off the mountains around me, fill my creek sludge, and then stock it with exotic and have men with guns tell me I cant fish it unless I agree to pay for papers and let them check they're in order on demand as they sneak around meddling and placing cameras everywhere. Meanwhile some turd with wheels protruding out past the side of their truck will be driving around flinging stones through everybody's windshields with impunity, while the sheriff inspects my sewage system and tells me I cant live on my property, and pulls me over everytime I go to store. Because that's what seems to be everywhere. Im poor. From what I seen, I will never be allowed to live with dignity and security and peace anywhere in the US. Now my dog needs an expensive operation. So there goes the money I'll never have again. Hope my dog is all better though, because she is my buddy in the forest everyday, and now I have to leave her home. I think I should expatriate to Costa Rica perhaps. I dont know about their trees and such, but I know they have cloud forest high in the mountains and coastal rain forest as well. I lived aboard my sailboat for 16 years sailing the East Coast and using my various skills to find work on yachts and and houses and docks, and I made and sold rope crafts, but I was regarded as a criminal and brutally treated as such everywhere I went and extorted and robbed and enslaved by pigs and everybody else. Americans ain't honest people. Im honest, Im American, but I seen enough to believe There can be no peace and dignity and security or happiness amongst such an abusive dishonest people, under an entirely corrupted government who pays many of them to abuse me, with my own money, all while telling me my puny money don't matter, I don't matter. Then they label me and enslave. Better to own nothing and wander in a van. They'll hunt me that too though. I cane here in a motorhome, squatting on beautiful rivers for free with my dog while working and looking for housing. They destroyed the beautiful places I camped. Just dumped concrete bridge debris and rebar on top of the trees. At least I got this beautiful forest outside my apartment, and nobody else goes into it, its awesome. Now its a felony to camp in Tennessee. I just paid way too much for a van to to camp and go canoeing with my dog with, but then some POS Tennessee senator pushed through this Felonious Camping Law while yakking about Hitler. Im thinking, I wish Id already left. I couldve gotten my dog operated on in Costa Rica probably easier, and saved enough money to pay for the trip down and to have my teeth fixed as well. Instead I'm in line to become a Felonious Camper convict in private profit prison while the fuckers gas my dog, because I dared to van camp checking out land to buy or whatever.
