7 hour flight to Antarctica from Christchurch in a C130, 5 hours in a C17.
The British Isles are closer to the North Pole than New Zealand is to the South Pole - we are at the same latitude as Southern Europe/Spain

Hi Guys
I am in my late 70's and have lived in Auckland my whole life but have visited many other countries.
What I am enjoying most is that you are giving us an insight into many places that we just pass through on our way to somewhere else. Your unfailing enthusiasm is a delight. I look forward to following the rest of your journey and am yet to watch your other countries experiences which I am sure will be just as delightful.

Cheers and good luck.

Welcome to NZ. I live in the Waikato since 2009 and before that 4 years in Dunedin. I found that different parts of NZ has different types of cold or hot. I found in Dunedin hot but not as humid as the Waikato can get, so the hot down south I could handle better. While the winter in the North Island feels more damp, I experienced winter down south a dryer cold. I have lived most of my life as a north Islander and found the South Island very beautiful.
If you find yourself in New Plymouth from now till January, they have the festivals of lights at Pukekura Park I recommend it, I try and go every year when I visit my family.

I am from South Auckland. The cheapest buffet you'd find around here (for dinner) is $36. I'm shocked you found a buffet in the city area for just $25 but even more surprised to hear that you think that's expensive compared to Europe. This says a lot about our country's economy!

Hey, it's indeed winter in Auckland now, got a few months to get our head around when we arrived a couple of years ago from India. And we now call Auckland home, it has been a great journey so far.

Welcome to NZ, sorry about the prices of food and Fuel, there are cheaper choices, like small butchers and fruit and vege shops, don't forget to try a steak and cheese pie from a bakery. Best of luck to you both.

Anyone else remember the top of Queen St being called China Town. It definitely used to look and feel like China Town back in the day, and it was a great spot to shop, eat and meet new people. Not so much these days though. Auckland City used to hum, and it just feels empty nowadays. Which is weird because the population of Auckland was a lot less back then. I guess with the concentrated spread of urbanisation, people no longer have a need to travel City Bound for things they couldn't normally find in their local neighbourhoods. Thank you guys for your awesome views on Auckland. Always nice to hear what people from overseas think and feel, be it good or not so good :)

Welcome to Auckland!! Sorry about the terrible prices for fuel nd stuff, but make sure to go see the harbour bridge, the shy tower, and if possible Rangitoto. Make sure to try pineapple lumps or a steak and cheese pie. As a proud Aucklander I welcome you to New Zealand. ❤❤

About the climate. I used to believe the climate was similar to Ireland and the UK. However, nine years out of ten NZ has a good summer. Most of the North Island also has mild winters, no snow and little frost. Queen St, is not the prettiest place in the CBD. But at the bottom of the hill, you have Britomart, Princes Wharf, The Viaduct and Wynyard Quarter. All exceptional. Ponsonby is also worth a visit for the bars and cuisine.

A walk from the top of Queen street (from Karangahape road) all the way to the end at the waterfront is a good start to visiting Auckland and the CBD. The Auckland CBD is very occupied by Asian cultures, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc. Auckland doesn't squarely represent the rest of the country, once you've driven south of the city, you'll see a different country. You can go to Rotorua, Waitomo caves, Tauranga, the Coromandel. There was one clip of Tauranga which is another one of NZ's most beautiful cities.

Welcome❤
I hope you see alot of the untouched by man areas of NZ because it is far different from the pollution and chaos of the big cities

Look, like it or not, New Zealand is an Asia Pacific country, not part of Europe, and geographically it is closer to Asia than Europe, plus Asian/Chinese people arrived in NZ roughly around the same time as the European settlers did. If what you want to see in NZ is only the British/European cultures (cafe, pub, people of the same skin color and same look as you guys, etc) but nothing else, why bother to fly over here? Just stay in Europe then. But as you guys are now further down south, I guess you should have seen the more 'European' NZ that you want already.
