I feel like Lu Ten's death being a conspiracy weakens the story. Lu Ten dying by following his father's footsteps is a lot more appropriate, and would make Iroh question his life choices.

Iroh ain't really a pacifist. You can see on the show that he isn't afraid to use nessessary force to get things done.

Imagine being a dad and finding out your son died in a siege that was planned by you... The pain

The new avatar studios should really consider giving iroh a mini series explaining more about his past, spirituality, and how he gained wisdom, and how he joined the white lotus… ect…..

Except Ozai could have never guessed that Iroh would just give up on the siege and come home after his son had died. It would make more sense for Ozai to have Iroh killed

Makes sense... but I like the idea that his father (Iroh) gave him (son) marching orders and he (son) followed them and died. Hence Iroh had to sit with the fact that he had ordered his son to his own death.... no assassination or anything, just the brutality of war.

Honestly I think Iroh sent his son on the front lines, wanting the capture of the city to be his crowning moment in the war, then after his sons death Iroh went to the front lines and felt extreme guilt seeing the destruction up close and how brutal his soldiers actually were. This made him use his authority to pull his men back, blaming himself for the death of his son and the death of everyone else.

i think iroh has been kind of the same road like zuko at the beginning. He also desired power like ozai. After his son's death saw his mistakes
thats why Iroh always tried to correct Zuko's steps .For not ending up at the same path. Its like Iroh had Zuko as he's own son

I think Lu Ten simply died in battle. And if they got rid of that it would've sort of destroyed the point, similar to how lacintag (top comment) explains it. Also not only that but it was also sort of in honor of Mako, the voice actor of Iroh as well in some aspects. Still a good theory though.

You do have a point I suppose this matter is worth looking into

While the theory of Ozai having Lu Ten killed makes a lot of sense I think that he died while taking unnecesary risks trying to impress his father, explaining why Iroh blames himself for his death and his new approach to life and why he wants to protect Zuko, not wanting his nephew to end like his son in an attempt to impress his father.

Despite the bad things Iroh has done, the scenes that show his love of tea and gentleness was what he was like even before the siege

I wonder who Lu Ten's mother is. Now there's a story!

The theory isn’t all that far off, considering that Ozai poisoned Azulon in order to gain the throne. So Ozai was clearly capable of eliminating his own family members. Even Zuko was on the chopping block until Ursa saved him by providing the very poison that killed Azulon. So it’s not inconceivable for this to be true.

I kinda hate the idea that Ozai murdered Lu Ten, not only because it's kinda unlikely (as why wouldn't he murder Iroh also) but also because it's a thematic mess.

Iroh's son as a unfortunete consequense of war that made him rethink what's valuable to him. It made him see that whatever benefit Sozin saw in the unification of the four nations wasn't worth the cost. It didn't change Iroh into a pasifist but he decided that if he is going to sacrifice anyone ever again it should be for a cause worth dying for and not just ambitious conquest

And Lu Ten's falling in glorious combat also shows the audience the real cost of war, since there really weren't any characters that died on-screen and even off-screen Lu Ten is pretty much the only named character that died fighting in the war (Jet and Katara's mom died off-screen I quess but they didn't really die fighting in the war)

I think it would’ve gone more along the lines of Iroh had to choose between either finishing the siege and saving his son, and he chose to try to continue/finish the siege. Once he realized what he’d done, he’d call off the mission to try to search for his son, but it would be too late.

It’s so weird how there names go Sozin, Azulon, Iroh, like that’s weird but then all of a sudden Lu Ten, then Zuko and Azula

Wait a minute… who even was Iroh’s wife/Lu ten’s mother.

I remember reading a comment on some video suggesting that Ozai conspired with Long Feng to kill Lu Ten.
