Thank you SO much for this. I've struggled with this for so long and honestly felt like I just had no personal style because whenever I sing something I can't help mimicking whoever covered it in the way I associate with the song. I'm also autistic and prone to mimicking accents when speaking to people, it's just something my brain does. But recently I've been trying to find as many covers of a song as I can on YT so I can hear more styles applied to it and try to deconstruct the version that's stuck in my head into different elements--and it just leaves me confused. I think what I'll try now is just really doubling down and learning how to mimic certain styles I like and then try applying them to songs that artist does NOT cover, and see how that works out. Doing cover songs then yes I copy as much of the original performance as my range will let me. When I write (was writing) my own tunes it was a free-for-all really, however it came out and again if I can make the range and it sounded good and fit well.
