I was finishing up a fairly large welding project as the sun was going down, The battery in my auto hood died roughly at the same time and as it got full dark I could not tell that it wasn't operating correctly. I welded for about another two hours like that and then went inside.
When I woke up to go to the bathroom at about 2am i couldn't open my eyes because they were stuck shut with dried green goo or pus. I felt my way to the bathroom and soaked them with a warm washcloth to get them open. I had the worst flashburn for the next 3-4 days that i've ever had. That sucked.

This isn’t something cool it’s terrible, that poor young man is going to be blind in a few years and it kills me to see this because it encourages people to think this is tough or something

Eye doctor here - recurrent UV exposure will cause corneal burns, causes a cataract much earlier in life, and can cause solar retinipathy (burn of your retina). All of these things occur over time, not from a single exposure (usually unless it is a very intense prolonged exposure). All can be avoided with sunglasses/protection against UV light for literally a couple bucks. I assume the big welders mask is so that the skin on your face doesnt get exposed to the uv light (accelerates aging of your skin and can cause cancer over time). Please work safely, protect your eyes and skin and don't do what this man does - unfortunately he will regret it when he gets a bit older...

At work, I looked at the arc, on and off, for about 5 minutes. I woke up during the night in such pain with arc eyes, when I turned the lights on, I couldn't see a thing excrpt for a blurry, tear soaked mess, which lasted until midday, in agony!
Not a good idea to try this, people!

I did that as a kid once, my dad was welding a project but I didn’t have my shield down. That night I couldn’t sleep my eyes hurt so bad I never forgot again. I have heard of guys use three pairs of sunglasses to weld. Thanks for sharing.

You should really not promote it as a "skill". People will try it to be cool and end up getting hurt for rest of their lives. Instead you should buy that guy a welding mask. He would appreciated it and it is not high expense for you. Promoting it like this is just irresponsibility of very high caliber.

Flash burn is no joke. You get it even when the welding arc is in your peripheral vision. I learned the hard way.

The secret is that his vision looks like he's permanently looking through a mask, recognizing his own kids now is a bit more tricky.

You should not work with anyone who allows their employees to do this. You're making a short about a man literally blinding himself and acting like it is little more than a novelty to you.

Isn't the welders mask to prevent blindness, not just to tone down the bright light?

You should ask him, it would be really interesting to hear his thoughts...

An old welder taught me a trick for quick welds. Use the gas shield to block the actual arc of the weld from your eyes. You can still get flash burns but not as quickly as staring directly into an arc. It's not ment for big jobs, only for small welds and there are risks involved.

That's common in the Asian factories that crank out department store bicycles. They have a few years before they lose the vision in the center of their field of view and can't do it any longer. They will typically "Hide behind the Cobra" or keep the actual mig torch directly between their eyes and the arc, but that only makes it less insane. Certainly not a good practice at all.

Dude, I’m a welder & this shit is nothing to smile about. I fucked around one day and was tacking something together I had to hold, so I’d hold it with one had, place my gun, close my eyes & tack it quickly. It burned my eyes through my eyelids so badly I had to lay in a dark room for 2 days with a wet rag over my closed eyes, it was horribly painful. Feels like you have sand behind your eyes. & I promise, if he does this for anymore than MAYBE a couple weeks he will have irreparable damage done to his eyes. It’s just not fucking worth it, with any form of personal protective equipment. You have time to do your job, you only have one sent of eyes/any other body part.
