If you want no tear-out on the back of the board, use a backer plate tight against your board. That will prevent any tear-our and the hole will be nice and ckean, almost like the ones made with a forstner bit. I use them all the time, not only for pre-drilling.

They're also great if you're doing drywall anchors or into studs - both wood and metal.

I've got a punch that's double-ended with a nailset on the other side and linked with a spring. Easy to keep in your pocket.

You can eliminate the tear out on the back by clamping a piece of scrap to the back of the good piece. The same concept works on wood plastic and metal.

The "metal box" is called an index. The bits bit exactly in the holes so you can test out drills that the site is not readable. They also
Make index cards that have holes to gage your bits.

99% of beginners get these because they work on all types of material. If you are getting a supply for woodworking, I'm sure 99% of us would get Brad point, or spade bits.

Brad point bits work well for centering the bit on your mark.

135 degree bits are not for wood. They’re too blunt. They walk around and shanks are sharp enough to Waller out the hole. Metals only. Just buy brad point or Forster depending on size. For jobber they aren’t great but extremely affordable and will cut a clean hole
, unlike 135degree metal bits.

Where did you even learn to use those words??

They are NOT angle bits or twist bits.

What you've shown is a drill index of jobber length twist drills.

The primary use of such drills is in harder materials like steel.

Good to have them around, but the are NOT designed for wood or any soft, fibrous materials.

Spade drills, forstner drills, etc are the best drills for good quality holes in wood. They shear the fibers at the outside diameter first when exiting the hole.

These evacuate chips faster than wood-specific ones
