When I replace doors at work, I use an awl both for the hinges and on the strike plate holes. Nice video. This looks like a better tool for the job and will look out for it next time I'm at Home Depot or Lowe's. Thanks for the tip! No pun intended. 😂😂

Great tip. I have been using these for years as a hobby furniture builder. They come in different sizes. I use the smaller sizes for hinges on cabinets when you are using #4 and #6 screws. A time saver when installing doors that use #8s and up. You still have to make sure they are perpendicular to the hinge but thats it. Make sure to keep them cleared out or the spring /plunge action will be hampered. A great tool.

These self centring drill bits are really useful with the depth stop, I bought mine as a set on sale and they've been nothing but an absolute time saver when changing all the doors in a full house renovation. They've pretty much paid for themselves 10 times over.

These are also good for automotive. Say a bolt brakes off, like that ever happens, inside the threads. You can use it to make sure you are drilling in the center of the broken bolt so you don't damage the threads. They make these self-centering bits in several different sizes and you can replace the drill bit with any type you want.

Yes, use these regularly. Don’t forget to mention these come in various diameters (sizes) to work with various size hinges and their complimentary screws/fasteners. Have never seen them in my local Depot or Lowe’s, but have found them in Menards, ACME, Truvalue, and Ace hardware stores. Good info for everyone so thanks for the demo, Vince. Stay safe all.

My Dad was a cabinetmaker and used self centering drill bits all the time when he put hinges on. Brought back great memories. Thanks Vince & VCG Bros for the video!

I've heard of self-centering drill bits and I can understand how useful they are. I don't install a lot of doors, but I install drawer slides quite often. I'm sure that they are more accurate than a regular drill bit but I feel that I can get accurate enough to the point where my drawer slides are almost always super smooth and don't feel that the self-centering bits are really worth buying.

That being said, I have been told that they are pretty much essential when hanging cabinet doors because the smallest imperfection in drilling out those holes can cause a lot of trouble. I really feel that the usefulness of these bits really depends on the type of work you do, how important it is for you to be accurate, and how comfortable you feel with your own ability to drill accurate holes.

I'm surprised no one is talking about where this tool is really Valuable . This is a must have if you are drilling for adjustable shelving in cabinets, book shelves, etc . Not only is it centering the bit on your template, it is assuring you drill to the exact depth needed when properly set up.

I am a CNC machinist and am used to drilling extremely precise hole locations and deeply understand how important it is to have precise hole locations when you are mating components. I cannot even begin to explain how many different types of tools exist for a whole bunch of different custom applications and a bunch of companies haves custom tools made just to manufacture their or their client's custom product. The right tooling or even workholding for the job makes ALL the difference. I didn't know about self-centering drill bits like that because that isn't really too applicable in my industry unless they have carbide variants, and yet I'm still going to buy one on the off chance I have to relocate a door hinge because that is a GREAT little tool to have. Who cares what it costs, it's worth it, as long as it's not creeping up to the cost of the high-precision cobalt, powdered metal, or full carbide, or carbide tipped drills (changeable insert just at the tip, super convenient!) And the through tool coolant drills we use in my industry....It's easily worth it. As long as the price is relevant to the price of tools we use, it's well worth buying even if it's just going to sit in my tool box waiting for the day I have to do it.

This was almost like being shown a spoon and instructed how to use it. But until you’re introduced to something and how to use it properly, then you don’t know about it. I’m a lifelong woodworker and I’ve never seen a self centering drill bit. I love learning about new tools and tricks. Thank you

I HAVE used these bits to install hinges on various cabinet doors. They make sure that your hinges are installed straight and that you use the correct pilot hole. I do not use them a lot but when I do they eliminate the angst that I might have if I did not use them. Very useful video. Kudos!

I used to use vix bits for drilling in place of drill guides. Instead of buying a ton of drill guides for templates you can locate the location you need to drill with a countersink. The vix bit will center up within the countersink and drill your hole in same location everytime. Great for jobs that require multiple drilling of the same location.

Awesome tool. Worth its weight in gold. Can I add to never use an impact drill when working on any door hardware. Always use the regular drill that has a clutch. Set the clutch and never have to worry about striping your holes. Wood or metal doors.

You can now get Vix bits with a 1/4" hex shank to fit your impact driver. Been using them for many years and worth every penny because as Vince says they keep proper alignment.

And if you do blow the hole out, then you hammer a wooden golf tee into the blown out hole. Then break it off. Now you can set your screw again.

Self-centering bits are very useful for critical hole locations....and just as important is the capability some have of setting the depth to which you, d like to and no further. As a builder and "special effects " designer for decades I would like to answer a question that many builders either do not recommend or do not know . There are many products, epoxies, and tricks to fill a hole that has either inadvertently been drilled in a wrong location or as is more often seen.... one so angled or skewed away from center as to misguide the hinge when installed. Since we do so many varied types of construction we have products that perhaps a home builder would not have readily handy but in this case we are speaking of something so compact, so suited, strong, and fast that it may be used for many situations. " Polyester resin ".. yeah... you know it as " Bondo " .! Do not kid yourself... a fantastic product available in a very small. can. The cream hardener comes ( included with purchase ) in both red and blue and when mixed results in either a pinkish or pale blue-green tint.... often close to what shade. the door will be . ( It wont show anyway ) Here, s the kicker guys... It takes 2-4 minutes to mix and fill a to wood BETTER than real wood. is ready to sand or scrape in minutes, and gives a guy a second chance to put a straight hole where he intended the first time. When predrilled alone or next to 3 others....it drills about the same as good wood ... is hidden... and twice as strong as the original wood. You will not pull that hole back out guys ! Too easy. (Just tape the little tube of hardener loosely to the side of it, s can. Don't have to but I put mine in a small zip lock bag...no muss- no fuss. Anyone tell you that this does not work well.... either does not know.... has an agenda.... or is simply using a more time consuming method, that is likely much more costly. Hope this helps someone.

I do historic window restoration up in Washington and we always use these for installing hardware like the lifts and catches/sweeps. Lifesaver when you’re drilling close to glass

As others have mentioned; an awl, nail set, or center punch is first used to mark the center of hole on hinges, strike plates, door latches. Then a small drill bit is used for a pilot hole and may step up to a middle size drill bit before the final size drill bit depending on the hardness of the wood. I normally drill one hole then put the screw in to hold the hinge in place before drilling the remaining holes. Nice informative video as usual!

Hung many doors and even sold them at Home Depot for 7.5 years and never saw or used that tool. We used the old style punch. Thanks Vince!
