The cancellation of the TSR2 was one of the greatest blunders in aviation history. When bureaucrats and politicians interfere with some of the greatest inventions of our time, it makes me physically ill. The potential of the TSR2 can never be understated. They didn’t even spare one for research, or for a museum. Such a waste.

I was at RAF Binbrook with the Lightnings.
My favourite plane since I saw my first one in 1964.
In 1977, my first Posting was Binbrook, I was being paid to Play Amongst Something Heroic.

Government "we need as much control over the project as possible, including huge committees and tiny design considerations". Also government " we are cancelling this project as it has become too expensive". The one thing that is a constant objective reality is that government interference causes overruns and failures. If politicians stayed in their lane, life would be so much better.

The Swedish J-37 Viggen had the same landing gear as the TSR2 and it worked very well. The Saab 37 first flew on 8 February 1967 and was delivered to the air force in 1971. The Saab 37 was developed under a Swedish Labor government and was a very successful aircraft that became the backbone of the Swedish Air Force for 35 years. Development began in 1952 (before the Saab 35 Draken had even completed its first flight) but was delayed until 1961 due to disagreement on the cost increase for the entire project. Curiously, mostly due to the influence of the British politician Duncan Sandys, who declared in 1957 that Britain would not develop any more manned fighter aircraft, but instead focus all development on robots.

Actually the vulcans didn't face a sobering defeat during the exercises in America if I remember correctly on two separate occasions a vulcan was able to penetrate the defences and simulate an nuclear attack run on the target or one off? The target cities
