Vegeta did have a point. Gohan wasn't taking the fight seriously, plus his lack of training has made him soft. He even went so far as to push Dabura to his full power when he wasn't at full power himself.

Vegeta knows how strong gohan is.
I like how vegeta never look at half saiyans in a discriminating way like humans would in real life. If you have saiyan blood and he sees you're strong and even stronger than him he will continue to push you so that he has something to almost motivate him to try to be strong like any prince would. Vegetas character is so well written.

Vegeta has always been one of Gohans biggest supporters. He's blatantly admitted that Gohan has the potential to be the strongest if he actually tried. So seeing Vegeta scold Gohan countless of times isn't coming from a place of hatred but rather faith and admiration.
