In Vegeta's own strange way, he was showing mercy to Gohan and was kinda fascinated, seeing another Saiyan child after his race had been wiped out, and a half-Saiyan at that. You could say Vegeta had big expectations from Gohan but he didn't say or show any of that. After seeing him transform into a Great Ape and got literally crushed by him, Vegeta must've developed an interest in Gohan's growth, and never got a chance to properly meet him prior to this.
