Discover our reforestation project in the Chippewa National Forest in Minnesota! First, we speak to Keine Karnes, Forest Manager for the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe. Given the overlap of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe and the Chippewa National Forest, he works with the community on a daily basis. 90% of the Leech Lake Indian Reservation falls within the Chippewa National Forest, making it the largest overlap in the United States.
Eric Taylor, a Forest Silviculturist for the Chippewa National Forest, explains that Chippewa National Forest is the first National Forest East of Mississippi and that their organization manages the forest together with the forest's Indians.
According to Chippewa National Forest's Public Affairs Officer, Mike Stearly, they are one of the multiple forests in region 9 of the U.S. Forest Service, but had their name changed in 1928 to honor the land's original inhabitants. Chippewa National Forest is at 1.6 million acres, with 670 thousand being managed by the US Forest Service.
As Travis Jones, Chippewa National Forest's District Silviculturist explains, the forest has a fair amount of diversity, provides habitat for wildlife, is one of the largest breeding populations of bald eagles, as well as active fisheries and waterfowl.
Today they're aiming to reforest a harvested area that was cut and taken to a local mill. They are now planting about 2,600 acres this year and have about 2.6 million seedlings. The role of the Forest Service is to ensure that the trees are being planted correctly, but the initial planting is just one step in the process.
Their first concern is climate change. In order to be better prepared, the whole community needs to be involved and we need to apply the science for native plants and soil health. The good news is that society appears to be finally listening, with more attention being given to how the tribe looks at things. A variety of tree species will be planted, such as red pine, white pine, and jack pine, but their team will need to follow up after planting to ensure growth and long-term survival.
The partnership with One Tree Planted allows them to improve their maintenance work after the trees have been planted, which significantly helps their reforestation program.
