How to Connect a Usb Flash Drive to iPad

Hi, I have a quick question, I’ve looked but so far I cannot find the answer. I have an older Ipad that doesn’t have the USB-C port, it only has the port to recharge the Ipad at the bottom that is an inch wide. How do I transfer files to a thumb drive? Where can I find what I need?> Thank you in advance for any answer.

When I connect the flash drive, it shows up in the files but when I try to open it, it switches back to the main file, after opening for a second. Help.
