His career took flight in the late 1960s when he made his television debut in "Dragnet 1967." His striking good looks and acting talent quickly garnered attention, and he started gaining recognition. The breakthrough came in 1968 with his role in "The Bandits" (also known as "The Scavengers"), which established him as a promising young actor. In 1971, Vincent earned critical acclaim for his performance in "Going Home," showcasing his dramatic abilities. The 1970s saw him starring alongside Hollywood legends like Charles Bronson in "The Mechanic" (1972) and delivering a memorable turn in "Buster and Billie" (1974). His rugged charm and charisma made him a sought-after leading man.

One of the defining moments in his career was being cast as Stringfellow Hawke in the hit television series "Airwolf" (1984-1986). This role solidified his status as a television star and cemented his legacy. His portrayal of a helicopter pilot in a high-tech military aircraft resonated with audiences worldwide. However, as his career soared, his personal life faced turbulence. Vincent grappled with substance abuse issues that affected his health, relationships, and career stability. A severe car accident in 1996 left him with a broken neck and chronic pain, further exacerbating his struggles.

In his later years, legal troubles and health problems continued to plague him. Tragically, Jan-Michael Vincent passed away on February 10, 2019, at the age of 74, succumbing to cardiac arrest. His life was a testament to the complexities of fame and personal demons, leaving behind a legacy that encompasses both the triumphs of his early career and the challenges he encountered along the way.

I’m a 71yo veteran and retired pilot. I always enjoyed his shows on TV. It actually motivated me to become a pilot. I’m sure he had a lot of fun. So count your blessings where you can.

My best Jan Michael Vincent memory is his portrayal of Buster in the movie Buster and Billie. It's a beautiful and sensitive movie about love, devotion, and compassion. I saw the movie when I was a teenager and it remains one of my favorites. Rest in peace, Jan Michael Vincent.

Mr. Vincent was a lesson to everyone. No matter how handsome, talented or lucky, if you let drugs, like alcohol, control your life, it takes everything away from you in very public ways. The guy just could never get away from his addictions. I've lost many people I've known personally the same way. Drugs are a really evil blanker blanker. Rest on Peace, Jan. We miss you.

He was a great actor beyond TV. The Mechanic was my favorite film he was in.

He exuded a strong, cool virility on screen. Girls swooned, and boys strived to emulate him. He literally helped to shape those perceptions in young minds.

It's crazy to compare the "thumbnail" photo of JMV to his young self. Everybody "ages", but this guy literally self-destructed.

I met him in the 1980's. I was invited to a dinner for a retiring California National Guard Recruiter, (I was an Army Recruiter in SoCal at the time), who managed to get Vincent in the Guard so he wouldn't have to go to Vietnam. His mother came to his office begging him to get her son in. He told her he didn't have a slot for him but she persisted and he made it happen.
The dinner was at a Polynesian place and Vincent got drunk and made a total Ass out of himself. The manager even threatened to throw us out if we didn't get him under control.

He was a troubled man. Good actor, but not a great one.

"Tribes" was an impactful TV movie during the era of the VietNam war and the draft. His role as a countercultural young man who was drafted into the Marines was memorable.

I was living in Mission Viejo CA when he had his accident in 1996. His car hit a large metal light pole. It was widely reported that it was a DUI related accident. Was very sad to hear of his accident. He lived at Lake Mission Viejo at the time, which was a beautiful area. Just wish he had an easier life and didn’t get caught up in alcohol abuse. He had the looks and talent to be able to act well into his later years but couldn’t escape his demons. He was one actor I would’ve like to have met and thanked him for his body of work. RIP JMV.

He came on to HOWARD STERN many times years ago. Now I love my Howard Stern, but he basically exposed the sadness that Jan Michael's LIfe had become. Being sober for 15 years I know the Life that I could have had if I didn't stop drinking alcohol. It was sad to hear his slurred words and things he had done I can't even bring myself to say. People tried to help him, but alcohol won. Wasted Life.

A girl I liked in high school had a huge crush on Jan and I became very jealous of him LOL. This was summer of 1976.

I was 14 when Airwolf first aired, and I was blown away by the whole thing. I thought Jan-Michael was the ideal pilot for Airwolf, heroic and stoic. That show lit a fire in me to become a helicopter pilot and build my own autogyro, but a later horrific crash by a friend of mine put an end to all of that idiocy, lol. I was a model builder as a kid, and Airwolf was one of most-loved models. Jan-Michael ranked right up there in my kid mind with Batman and all the other superheroes.

I'm 65 yo, and I'd have to say the movie that brought him to prominence in era was Disney's "World's Greatest Athlete".

The end scene of The Mechanic was a fantastic twist. And Hooper was fun movie to watch as a kid. Enjoyable.

I watched him in movies and on TV as I grew up and always had the sense that something was wrong with him but had no idea what it was until seeing this video. He had an undercurrent of being mad at the world that had nothing to do with the characters he portrayed. Now I know what and why.

Drugs & alcohol, three failed marriages, severe injuries and self medication with more drugs = prescription for disaster.

I know people with far worse starts in life who never had such problems, and also never had his chances and success. Therefore, I discount Vincent's early life as the general source of his personal disasters.

As a pop culture junkie, I was a little disappointed that JMV's late '60s gig on the Saturday morning kid's show "The Banana Splits" serial "Danger Island" wasn't mentioned.

I fell in love with him when I saw his film 'The Mechanic.' He was the best looking actor in the world then. I still cry over what happened to him and his career to this day. What a waste of looks and talent.
