I absolutely love red star. I gave 12 hens to a close friend who has lots of other chickens. Slowly, one by one, they would start to disappear! 3 weeks later, they would come back with about 15 chicks! At this point he probably has over 50 chicks. Now I have RhodeIsland Reds and I love them.

2:18 The Rhode Island Red roosters are pretty bossy with their hens, too! During the 1940s, my mother had a very large flock of free-range Rhode Island Reds, and they laid very well. We were in rural western Tennessee and when there was no market, she fed the excess eggs to the hogs. Imagine that today! The chickens were fascinating to watch and you could see the individual personalities. It was interesting to see their hierarchal structures, the roosters fighting for dominance, the dominant rooster's favorite hens as well as those he chose not to mate with, and their general sex lives which were very active!

I have Road Island Reds and they do lay large and brown eggs and they are friendly with my daughter and myself. They lay good in the winter as well.

Good morning, I have subscribed to your channel after watching this video. I aquired seven chickens and a coup 15 days ago. They have layed 31 egss in 14 days. I have a lot to learn but already enjoying them. I have two New Hampshire and five Orpingtons.

We bought 12 varied breeds most were very young. Our 4 Novagen Browns were the first to start laying and all 4 are giving us a medium to large egg nearly every day. I think they’re about the same as what folks call Asa Brown. We also have 6 leghorn mixes from 2 different farms so mixed with different breeds. All are white with black feathers scattered around. Three of them should start laying soon, the other 3 are still young. I think your assessment is spot on.

when in doubt ... get a buff orpington ... I personally have had great success with this breed and they truly are the golden retriever of the chicken family.

Even though I have a fondness for Brahma, Mystic Marans are hands down the best, most prolific layers of GIANT chocolate brown eggs I've ever had

We’ve changed around our flock quite a bit over the years trying different ones, and I have found my favorite one of all is the Sapphire Gem. They are a beautiful bird and great layer.

Besides those, we have a Jersey Giant, Barred/Plymouth Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, Easter Eggers, Americauna, and Black Australorps. We currently have 20 altogether with some older and some newer. We have done Rhode Island Reds also.

All have been good layers and pretty docile, though the reds are a little touchy sometimes. Sapphires are very laid back. We choose by laying and personality, and have only had 2-3 casualties over the years - one being our rooster, which needed to go anyway. We free range within an acre of land currently, though earlier flocks have had the run of the farm. Fewer casualties from predators currently, which warms my heart.

We have always gotten ours at Tractor Supply or one of our local farm supply stores vs mail order as we prefer to see them and get them a little bigger. We got the newest dozen late last year and got a huge savings buying them toward end of season (esp the Sapphires and Jersey, which run a bit more pricey).

ASA browns are great birds. Layed all winter even during their molt. Friendly and curious.

Hello, That was a great video and by the way what breed is the black rooster you have? I got the same looking rooster but I don't know the breed. Thanks!

My Rhode Island Reds have always been super mellow and friendly.

My number 1 chicken is the Golden Comet (also know as Red Star), super friendly ans really pump out the eggs.

If I was going to have a small personal back yard flock, that would be my #1 choice!
