I never hear anyone talking about Golden Comets. I have 4. They all started laying September 9 and I've missed 3 eggs. Thats it. They are the best layers Ive ever seen

I was born in the 60s raised in the 70s in rural Georgia. So coming from a family that raised there own food, ' crops and livestock ' I think simple is better. We raised rhode island reds and beard rocks, same as a plymoth. Both are excellent for eggs and meat and easy to raise. It's not rocket science. Hardest part in raising chickens is keeping hawks, foxes, racoons, possums, cats, dogs, weasels etc. From getting to them. Everthing likes chicken.

My White Leghorns laid the most and largest eggs, but were wilder than a 3-legged jack ass! I could just walk right up to any of my Red Star, Delaware, and even my huge Dark Cornish rooster, which was as tame as any dog and would sit on my shoulder as I worked in the pen when he was young. Even as a full grown huge rooster, I could pick him up and carry him around as long as I wanted and he would never even wiggle. My Red Star hens were also very tame and laid lots of large brown eggs. Red Stars were my overall favorite laying hens (tameless + egg laying). But my wild White Leghorns were jumbo egg laying machines!

I have several breeds of chickens. My Leghorns are the smallest of my flock, but they lay the largest egg of any of my chickens. They lay a lot of double yolk eggs.

My Barred Rocks were laying 2 a day. I caught much flack until I learned that they were not laying 2 a day, but back-to-back. Nobody knew this, but I researched diligently. This was dangerous for them as there was a high potential for egg lodging. I lowered their protein level and they slowed down production. They did not stop la ying during the winter. I love Barred Rocks. Don't need any other breed.

1. white Leghorn - 320 eggs a year, 2. Rhoade Island Red - 200 - 300 eggs a year, 3.) Plymouth Rock - 200, 4.) Australorps more than 300 a year, 5.) Red Star - around 300, 6.) Oprighten or is it a Buff Orpington chicken breed at 4:05 ?. Buff Orpington up to 200 - 280 as the Oprighten - 190 eggs so I guess they are different species . 7.) Sussex - 200/250 eggs a year .

Golden Comets are the very best!! I’ve had many breeds over the years and none come close to them!

I have Australorps and buff Orpingtons and jersey giants. Well only Giant rooster and buff Orpingtons/jersey giants. The jersey giants give me eggs daily. The Orpingtons give me about 6 a week and the Australorps give me about 3 per week. The buff Orpingtons and Australorps where broodered together. The jersey giant hens I bought and are a year older . I'm waiting for the cross breeds to grow up and think they will be the best and will keep breeding them together. I might get a buff Orpington too later .

For backyard chickens best is Barred Rock. Decent production and they are intelligent, quiet, courteous. Best breed period.

I like Buckeyes, they are on my list. I've narrowed down my choices of egg layers to Good to Excellent Layers, Rose Combs, Non-Setters, Good Temperament, Non-Flighty, Hardy, free-range, and Long-Lived. A mix of heavy and lighter breeds for where we live, which is the Ozarks. We make sure to have plenty of chickens, so they can pile up on the roost in the winter and keep each other warm. It gets plenty cold in the winter, and the summers can be awful. Here is a list of my favorites.

Buckeyes
Barred Rocks/Dominques
Black Astralorps
New Hampshire Reds
Rhode Island Reds
Red Stars
Anconas

In our flock we have a red shaver, a hyline, orpington cross and baby light sussex and road islands, we used to have a Plymouth rock cross too. None of my girls lay during winter or malting apart from the shaver and hyline they lay during a malt. Can't wait to see how my babies will do ehen they start laying

Rhode Island Reds are not only beautiful, but excellent layers. We have several in our flock.
