Interesting video. The ringing sound is a great check then, since Tungsten seems to dull the resonance completely vs the softer gold.

You'd think they'd have used the correct alloy of gold, silver and copper for the outside though. Going to all that effort to then make it so obviously fake by being pure gold plating.

Boy that sucks. What is the market doing to protect the buyer? Kinda makes me want to by the SMI bars or Maple Leafs with the security features. Even the geiger bars have a few security feature.

it's kind of disturbing, but not surprising, that the Secret Service did nothing. Aren't these supposed to be legal tender US currency? It seems like they would have got into more trouble for counterfeiting a $20 bill. Opens a whole new door for criminals. Get caught, and nothing happens, other than maybe a small fine.

Was that testing machine you used the Niton XL2? or The Niton XL1 perhaps? It's just in their adverts they were demonstrating a feature that was coming up saying something like "gold plate likely" or not. I assume this means it was detecting whether it was likely or not that the metal was just coated in gold rather than solid gold? So it would seem that it can detect if it is just plated with gold. Can you explain why yours didn't? Is it an older version perhaps?

Hi again, do you have some new updates about te fake coins and sealed gold bars. I was scammed, I bought a PAMP 1 oz fake gold bar, sealed in the newest plastic "certificate". People should know about this, it's criminal intention to sell one of those

I know it's late, but did you try a ultrasonic thickness gauge on this fake? Tungsten is MUCH more rigid than gold (or silver, or copper) and sound waves travel more quickly through it. So the thickness reading on this fake should be way off. I'm thinking by at least 50%, though I don't have one of these fakes to test. Ultrasonic has an advantage over the XRF tester in that the sound waves penetrate through the coin and are not limited to a thin layer on the surface.

Hope this is still current enough.  Two questions.  Would it be better to have a color spectrometer (real thing?) if you believe the color to your eye was wrong?..and, how is a coin stamped out of really hard tungsten?  It's my understanding that if they use sintered tungsten carbide that it will be slightly magnetic with a rare earth magnet.

I would have thought given the type of use these guns are for that Tungsten would be in the library, on the initial vid, I thought, bet it is tungsten. Not that I am a professional, just in recent times I have seen a few vids on tungsten being used in fakes, so that is what I thought.

Hi Mike,
I received some 2015 GE's a few days ago and they appeared distinctly more copper/orange color than previous years. All of them had the pure extended ringing when struck so I am not suspecting a fake but can you add any information with your experience here? Have you noticed any color variations in the 2015 issues?

These coins are being illegally sold on Alibaba by one Chinese company. They are heavily gold plated with a tungsten core. They look flat and any bullion dealer will recognize them as fakes.
