It was in the chaos of a kitchen where chef, restaurateur and TV cooking judge Tom Colicchio learned how to be himself. The author of the new cookbook-memoir, "Why I Cook," talks with "CBS Mornings" co-host Tony Dokoupil about his journey from middle-class New Jersey to elite restaurants in New York and Las Vegas, and from the depths of drug abuse to the heights of fine dining.

I've always admired Tom Colicchio's work ethic and talent but now that I learn he's from Elizabeth, NJ, where I spent many hours in their libraries - now I think even more highly of him. Thanks for an inspiring story.

Cooking is an act of love, it is an art, only for the very few who has the senses and the skill to do it properly !

🤦🏻‍♂I helped open Tom Colicchio's restaurant called CRAFT here in Los Angeles/Century City many years ago and he didn’t give me 2 seconds of his time when I met him. Sorry buddy, but first impressions are lasting impression. Restaurants are notorious for having toxic work environments if you could be anything to your employees when you first met them...be kind, shake each of their hands look them in the eyes and, thank them for their contributions they're not just another number in the H.R. files.

Met him one time at a charity event with Food and Wine Magazine....he was not the nicest person in the was supposed to do meet and greets with the fans for the charity and he was mad he had to do it....the charity was embarrassed and several people took back their donations of sizeable amounts...maybe he was having a bad day and others said...Same old TC...that's him

He finds himself where he is my mere chance. I have followed him for years and have witnessed nothing to suggest he has real culinary talent.

Had the honor to share craft some years ago. Left an impression on me that has upped my cooking game. Don't care about his personality
