Food TV is often either very relaxing or highly stressful, depending on the show. Sometimes, a show that might be great for chilling out to can suddenly ramp up the anxiety substantially with a contestant, judge or guest who clashes with the general vibe of the proceedings.

Take Top Chef, for instance. It's welcomed plenty of guests over the years who fit in astonishingly well with the regular cast of culinary experts: Tom Colicchio, Padma Lakshmi and Gail Simmons. For instance, Anthony Bourdain kept coming back and was an absolute fan favorite. But not everyone fit in so well. Some just made things awkward. One judge, in particular, was extremely harsh. You always have that wannabe Gordon Ramsay in every judging competition.

The worse was that Chinese guy from L.A telling a Mexican chef that he made bad tacos. And said "I'm from L.A" and I was waiting for the chef to say "and I'm from Mexico"

Most of the judges and contestants are overly confident. Tom seems genuine.

Bourdain was the harshest/most critical but he was super funny. That British guy (Tony?) was overly critical too.

Cooks who specialize in one cuisine are poor judges. This judge is all about Asian flavors and anything that deviates is substandard in his opinion.

If all the judges were harsh it would not be good, neither if all were gentle, probably a combination of four to one gentle to harsh would be ideal.
