A step-by-step tutorial on how to exclude internal traffic in Google Analytics 4 (but still see yourself in the DebugView)

If you filter out the internal traffic in Google Analytics 4, you also won't be able to see yourself in the DebugView. But there is a workaround that will allow you to filter the internal traffic but still see your events while debugging in the DebugView.

Hi, Based on your advice, I have excluded my IP address from GA. I immediately checked how it worked. At that time and after 10, 20 min. in GA I no longer saw my logins in my webstore, but ... after a few days, although it is still listed in GA for exceptions, it absolutely does not play anymore. All I have to do is enter it into my webstore I can see my actions in GA instantly. Why doesn't your advice work?

Thanks, brother, you saved me; my case was blocking the influencer purchases from GA4, so I followed your tutorial, and using the look-up table, I put the Input our influencers email, and Output is internal. And Yes is working. Thanks a lot 😍

latest version path for internal traffic (sorry the following "path/options" below are translated from german to english and not taken from GA directly but should more or less match):
Goto "Data Stream" > "Tag-Settings" (first option under google-tag section); click on "show more" in the settings section to see all options, then click on "define internal traffic"... ;)

Hi ! thanks for the video this is so awesome! I have a question starting with the preview section - I wasn't able to find "tt" under my preview, and when I flip to admin tech debug view, there's no "traffic_type" under my page views. I went to my website to look at under developer network, was able to find the 204 GA4 link, and still there's no "tt" or "developer" in that paragraph. What could be wrong? thanks a lot!

Since this video, Google has announced that IP addresses won't be stored at all -- do you know if this changes the procedure for excluding internal Traffic? Or can it exclude the sessions by IP address without actually storing the IP address?

Thanks Julius for your videos, great tutorials and your continued effort to educate non-tecnical marketing professionals. I have one issue with excluding internal traffic in GA4 and I think many of your followers experience the same issue. User_id's are oftent tracked in GA4 and applied in the GA4 config tag as {{DLV-'user_id'}}. It seems like {{lookup - debug mode - developer undefined}} conflicts with 'user_id'. As a result I can't see test traffic in GA4 debug mode. I know it is hard to understand the full picture here but does it make sense to you and do you have any ideas how to solve it?

Hi Julius and thanks for all the huge support you are providing!
This video is 2 years old but it seems to be working very similarly now. However, using an already set up GTM I have a slightly different situation. The data is sent to the website using Custom HTML. So what I have done is to use `gtag('set', {traffic_type: {{Lookup - Debug mode - developer or undefined}}});`
Now, the weird thing is that GTM assistant is still showing "internal" in the page view's "tt" parameter. But when Debug Mode in my GA dashboard starts showing the data...
Am I doing it right or wrong? As long as I am unsure I am not going to publish my changes in GTM as I don't want it to completely bypass the internal traffic for everyone...

As of now it doesn't seem like the first method works. I'm trying to use on a SPA, React website. There are no query string parameters.

if my google tag manager happens to be at a different language, the conditions would have to be in that language or in english would work?

Hi Julius, thanks for your awesome content. I have a small query. I successfully excluded my internal traffic in GA4, but when I configured GTM with GA4, it started showing up the internal traffic again, despite the fact that it's excluded within GA4. Do I have to use debug view when using GA4 with GTM? Can you please drop a line or two just to steer me clear of the confusion? TIA

Hello! I am trying to follow your video, however my Googel Analytics dashboard does not have the option of More Tag Settings

Thank you for your video. Filtering out internal traffic via IP address wasn't a workable solution for my Organisation (too many dynamic IP addresses). I have created tags in GTM to identify staff. But it seems that within GA4 reports, it doesn't allow me to set that exclusion condition. I'm stuck! Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I'm wondering if in December 2022, this workaround is still needed to filter out internal traffic, yet keep your own traffic in the debug view. Is there a different way now? Otherwise, this is really easy to follow! Thanks!

Hi... Do i still need to do the steps after activating the filter, by now, febr 2022?

Hi Julius. First of all, thank you for the video :) I really appreciate what several of your videos have done for me!
I wanted to ask you, do you know if the internal filter changed to automatically do all this? Because I followed every step to the dot, checked like 5 times (even through Developer tools that my tt was coming through as developer) that I was not making any mistake but I still can't see myself in the debug mode... Any recommendations?

Let's say if I want to add other peoples to be excluded, do I only need to add their IP address in the analytics internal traffic ?
