I like how this scene serves as establishing character moment for not only Ripley, but for Hicks and Apone too.

Ripley is shown to not be content with sitting around and is eager to do whatever she can to help, Apone accepts her offer and shows that he doesn’t care if a person is a man or woman, he only cares for what a person can DO, and both Apone and Hicks are impressed with Ripley’s capable handling of heavy machinery.

I love how Appone and Hicks look like two kids in a candy store when they see Ripley can handle the loader like a pro. These are clearly two men who are completely secure in their masculinity.

Why do "old" movies like Aliens look so much better and the acting/writing are so much stronger than anything filmed today?

I love this scene.
1) Ripley's request to help isn't demanding. It comes off genuine. Not about showing off being a female bad ass. It's about being a functional member and perhaps doing anything in her power to ensure everything goes well.

2) Doesn't shit on masculine men to make a point. The men are outwardly polite if a bit disbelieving at first. Perfectly natural.

3) Ripley actually demonstrates competence. Love the understated no fuss way she gets it done. Very attractive to me as a man.

4) The scene has a terrific payoff towards the end of the film when she battles the Queen.
This is one way to write an incredible female hero. 👍
