CA Highway 127 has been closed since flash floods devastated the area this past summer — almost three months ago! This is one of the main routes into Death Valley, and the closure is really hurting local businesses — and creating a huge hassle for residents.

Why doesn’t Caltrans just fix it and reopen it, already? How bad could it really be? Join me and my friend, a Jack-of-all-trades desert rat known as “Better Call Paul,” as we investigate the road damage in his bizarre Frankenstein’s monster of a 4x4, the Tacombover.

Paul pulled me out a few years ago. Front right blew in my Ranger and I'm in a ditch. No cell signal but a trucker saw me and Called Paul. Auto Club member, no love. Paul helped me swap my tire and was there in like 35 minutes vs AAA 2 hrs. I gave him more than he asked for against his desires. He is a good and honest man.

What people don't realize about Death Valley is that the valley is really up to 11, 000-ft deep and filled with erosive materials from the hills. And, it is continually subsiding and getting deeper at the surface. The Valley used to be a deep sea or lake. The place is a collection of fascinating geology.

Wow!!! So much of that area is dry lakebed but when it washes away it really cuts down. My wife and I got caught in a summer thunderstorm there once a couple of years ago coming back from Pahrump to our house in the Antelope Valley. That river was flowing heavily and there was a standing wave as the water at the salt creek crossed the 127 just south of the bathroom. The wave was higher than the cab of my pickup truck when we first got there. After about a half hour it was only a few inches deep across the road but when it was roaring it really was flowing. No road damage, thankfully and the storm wasn't for three days like the hurricane that came through this year but only lasted about an hour total. We absolutely love that area and think it is all so pretty. Stopped yesterday in Baker and got some Alien jerky on the way home from Las Vegas. Really would have liked to go through Pahrump and Tecopa instead of coming down the 15 on the Sunday after Thanksgiving... I sure hope it opens up soon.

That looked like fun. My dad bought an 89' Ford Ranger crew cab when I was a kid and I still maintain that truck today. Some great adventures. I'm glad I'm still alive too. Lol..
