Use a lip stain, if you leave it on for a long enough time it won’t be super sheer and it won’t get the mouth piece dirty. Another commenter recommended Sunset Makeup’s lip stains and I would also recommend them.

I actually played the French horn for a short while. Exfoliate your lips bc the lip skin and gunk shed gets color everywhere.
Use food coloring as lip stain. It doesn’t have any glossy additive or anything and just colors the lips. Longest lasting without transfer ice experienced. And you can use lipliner with it too.

It also works well under lipsticks to avoid the wear lines.

As a male French horn player who’s never worn makeup, this was fascinating! And the result wasn’t nearly so bad as I expected.
This reminds me of the time I had to prepare for a concert with a cold sore on my lip. Plenty of “material” left on my mouthpiece too. Gross, I know. 😅 As often as I wash my it, I don’t think a little lipstick on my mouthpiece would bother me one bit!

THIS IS SO REAL! I’m on drill team and in band so when I switch over for fourth quarter I have to play my baritone with red lipstick. The one I’ve found to work the best is Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick! It holds SO well! I use the shade Exhilarator and it is the perfect red!!

Make sure you exfoliate or moisturize your lips as needed too. The best lipstain won't help if the skin is flaking off!

You’ve enlightened me, I’m in the late stages of producing a musical and it didn’t even cross my mind that that some musicians wouldn’t be able to wear certain makeup, I will keep this in mind ((:
