What is the reality of life in Russian in 2023? How are Russian's living now? What type of houses do they live in?

Subscribe to my 2nd channel for Russian road trips;

All foreigners who live, lived or have visited Russia can agree on one thing, Russia is an amazing country. Now I’m not gonna do a pitch on how amazing it is. It is however, my adopted country and I can say one thing for sure, Russia gets ridiculously bad press!!!!

The reason I started this project was so we can honestly show what Russia is really like. This is to benefit anybody wanting to visit Russia and wants honest information. This is not Government sponsored or any sort of propaganda. On this site you will see the good and the bad.

My name is Sam Hyland. I am an Englishman living in Russia since 2004. I have been involved in a number of different projects during my time here and had lots of experiences, good and bad. As a foreigner, I understand the difficulties of moving to Russia (Not because Russia is a big, bad, scary country) because while it maybe big, it is far from scary! Russia is an exciting country and has lots to offer anyone who would like to give it a try.

Below is some ways to get in contact with me

I love that young guy answered "if God lets me" to question if he will become a priest. In Islam we say the same (Insh-Allah)

Sam, One thing I always like about your videos is your meeting and talking with people and how friendly they are. I notice that many people in Russia are knowledgable and proud of their history. Given the various periods that Russia has gone through in the last 100 ish years it's not surprising to find such varied housing as they are a reflection of peoples wealth over those periods. I think the best house would be a modern built one but that is based on a traditional house. I think the Russian fireplace/stove/heater would be a great thing to have in a house especially if you lived in a more rural area. I'm thinking of trying to have one built in my cottage here in Canada.

Very interesting to see the evolution of housing there. Thank you, Sam, for bringing us along your neighborhood walk. 🏠 In this time of world discontent, it’s soothing to see your calm and happy videos.

Homes with stone lower level and wood upper level were NOT build in stages. They were build like this in the 18 - early 20th century. It was very common and done so mostly for practical reasons.
1) a lot of original owners were merchants or skilled artisans. The lower level was where they kept the goods for sale or when they had their shops.
2) lessening effects of fires. Wooden houses meant increased chances of fires. Stone lower levels meant lower chances of fires. The lower level is also where u kept the kitchen.
3) stone lower level prevented the dirt and rot from destroying the first floor.
There also several otherpractical reasons for the first floor being made out of stone. And at certain point it became fashionable.
Meanwhile, the second floor was made out of wood because russians like that. Wood keeps homes warm in the winter and cool during summer. Russians find it cozy and beautiful. And it allowes them to decorate houses with gorgeous wooden carved art.

Since last summer I live in my own house in a big city of Russia! Walking along my street I can see houses of very different style, old, new, rebuilt, big, small and I am not tired to watch them over and over again

What a freedom in Russia there is. In most of the so-called "democratic " countries, getting a planning permission is right next to impossible. In Russia??? Feel free to build pretty much anything you want 😀😀😀 And again, a man walks out of the door, and immediately he bumps into friendly people to chat up with ... I definitely know where I want to live.

These neighborhoods are really special as the old style houses mix with the the new and this is very beautiful. Russian typical houses are amazing and particularly precious for their historical value and it should be a pity to demolish them. Certainly they need to be restored, but this is another problem and the local authorties should help the owners to do it. Anyway this is an amazing mix then the churches are a fairytale Your walk is always nice and the people that you meet so friendly. Thank you very much for sharing this awesome video.

English guy speaking perfect Russian interjects a different cultural spin. It’s cool to see the interaction.
