The best way to avoid small talk is to make it BIG, right away. Don't be shy or worry about how the other person will respond. Humor often works. It's a gift we've been given to help relate to one another.

I guess there's a fine line between making *successful* BIG talk and ending up being weird, overbearing. In this day & age, although we really look for 'depth', it is a bit like honesty - we sure want it badly but not so much when it is about us and it isn't pleasant;)

The chances of getting a "What does this guy want?" response are pretty high. People are also afraid of scammers and in many cultures, you don't go deep with strangers but reserve that for close friends.

You can move gradually from small to bigger talk, just TALK ;) If there's good chemistry and a deeper connection (of any kind), talking about more serious stuff will just come natural and quite soon, don't push it.

Another way may be in how you *respond* to standard small talk questions like "how are you?", "what do you do in life?", etc. Small question - big answer is an option, too.
