The sad thing? This has been a thing since BEFORE smartphones became a thing. My mom would tell me about a male family member who, in like the 90s or something, would carry this portable radio to listen to the sports games even when he was with family.

My Grandmother told my Grandfather that he would miss her funeral if there was a hockey game on. His response was, “Now honey, you know I would never arrange for your funeral to be the same day a hockey game was going to on.” 😂

My brother is in his 40s and he watched a movie on his phone while we were at the movies.

That is so true. But not just sports... social media, sports, news, anything glued to the phone.

Head phone in, listening to podcasts while someones trying to talk is also the equivalent. 🤪

That’s my dad. Christmas or Thanksgiving he is on his phone watching sports in his basketball shorts. Love that man.

Instead of recording it these are probably the same guys that expect you to work around their schedule and to not plan things during a game so as punishment they still watch it while attending

I can excuse the graduation one. That is such a slog to get through to hear one name and 10 seconds of a stage walk.

Having your smart phone in your face when you're supposed to be socializing with friends and family is the adult version of iPad kids no matter who it is...

My daughter has a tablet only for certain things - homeschool stuff she does when she's sick, gets hurt and has to stay down, or on road trips (sometimes 6 hours in the car or longer). She rarely gets it. The moment anyone comes to the door - even the mailman - she has to put it away. My brother's kids 3.5 - 7 years old are allowed to ignore their friends and family when it's tablet time at their house.

Some people are addicted to things like this or worse, they idolize these things. My dad was obsessed with the NE Patriots years ago. He would get so furious when they lost, especially if they lost the Super Bowl, and it would put our whole family on edge. He allowed a stupid football team winning or not to dictate his emotions and how he treated his family. Then he came to Jesus. He doesn’t even watch football anymore, and he feels like he wasted so much time in the past, and he feels really bad about the way he treated us.

As a woman, I have to say that it depends on the particular game. When our local pro football team won their first playoff game in 31 years, you'd better believe that I'd be right there with the guys watching the game! And our kids don't have ipads or smartphones till they graduate. We homeschool our kids, but even I can admit that some things are just important to guys, and I understand that. I've learned to adapt, having 9 boys.

My dad watched cricket while my mother was in labor with my little brother, needless to say, she was pissed.

This makes me glad to have a dad that isn’t obsessed with sports😅

Kind of like in those special events for women on their phones chatting to other girlfriends that are not there instead of actually paying attention to the event too

My husband uses sports as an emotional support animal. If things are super uncomfortable or awkward or stressful then he’s looking up random Brave’s players statistics.

It used to make me so angry that he would emotionally abandon me at his parent's house. Now I just text him and ask him to come back to the conversation.

That's a chunk of my hubby's family when we get together. Drives me nuts. I feel like I never know what's going on because I don't talk to them otherwise and neither does he.
