thank you SO much for explaining the settings for the camera as well. So many other videos only explain how to make the actual filter.

@jawayetti Yep. It's exactly the reason why I say to set the compass to draw circles the same size as the lens and show that the lens has a diameter of 50mm and the compass is set to 25mm wide. - Matt

@nandee1fuery You MIGHT be able to get it to work with a point and shoot. Try making the hole very small and set your camera to portraiture or macro mode so that the focus is shallow. Also have your camera focus on something close to the lens with the points of light far off in the background. Your camera will make the exposure time compensation automatically. Let us know if you get it to work! -Matt

what I just don't get: How can there be a full picture? The paper is covering almost the whole lens? I don't get this :X

@xoiheartyou Yes, it probably will. Give it a try and let us know how it goes.

@Schaaf ok so, all light waves still enter through this small hole. But yes, you are correct, they enter in a small area the size of the cutout. When these light rays hit the lens however, they spread back apart to form a full image. This is my understanding at least (there may be some more hardcore photo people who can get a little more specific)

Wow this is a pretty cool project.. One that you can easily do, not like kipkay's projects.. Those are just cool to watch..

just a remark: that paper needs to be as close to the front element of the lens as possible, otherwise it won't work. I tried it on Nikon 50mm f1.4G, which has that front glass set fairly deep in the lens body and when I put the paper just in front of the lens (let's say around where the filter threads are) it didn't work.

That's actually pretty awesome...

@JadeCookProductions It's black because you can't let any other light come through except the shape. If the paper allows too much light to shine through the effect will fade.

How do you get an object on front or somewhere else on focus, while the lights are out of it and the effect works?
The effect for me works only when everything is out of focus.

I have a question wont you get a lot of image noise if you use a cheap lens. would a prime lens do a better job in most cases and can I get shaped bokeh in film while filming and what type of lens would I need for that?

I also dont get how you get both the shaped light and the full image together? The result of this "trick" is a full image but because of the focus only the light that is far away comes in a shape?
