For those wondering if mixing RAM with different capacity but same clock speed and latency is fine :

Your RAM will run in Flex Mode, meaning it will still run in dual channel and a portion of the RAM run in single channel.

For example : 8 GB + 4 GB RAM = 4 GB + 4 GB will run in dual channel, and the remaining 4 GB from the 8 GB will run in single channel. Single channel means the remaining 4 GB will run in lower performance compares to the dual mode one.

BUT from my research, someone said that actually Flex mode's dual channel is (arguably) still losing by a bit in performance compares to its pure dual channel counterpart. I don't know if it's true.

To be safe : make sure that you have the same capacity, clock speed, latency etc.

But if you can't, you'll still be benefited from the Flex Mode's dual channel although the performance might possibly be not as optimal as the pure dual channel mode. Would love to hear anyone's experience on this. Regardless, running in Flex mode is still MUCH better than having a single ram running in single channel.

But keep in mind Flex mode only works for modern motherboards.

I'm thinking of picking up 2x32gb ram sticks 3600 mhrtz to add to my pc that's already running 2x16gb 3600 mhrtz. Going to be the exact same manufacturer just higher memory variants. Currently running the 2x16gb sticks in dual channel. In theory they should run fine as they'll be the same speeds 3600 mhrtz, and same manufacturer, but wanted to get others' opinions. What do yall think? Will this setup run fine together?

Great informative video guys.
I was running 16gig of HyperX 3200 ram in my system, but decided to upgrade to 32gig, So I bought 32gig of 3200 T-Force Vulcan Z ram at a good price. My wifes work pc also had 16gig of ram. I thought she had the same brand of ram as my 16gig I just changed out, but alas, it was a diff brand, Corsair, but all the other specs were the same. I'd did some research on ram compatability, and found I might get lucky & I could use them together. I stuck my old 16gig ram in her system, and it works just fine. It's been in there for around 8 months now, and she hasn't had an issue. Btw, all the ram is DDR4, which I had heard was a very much hit & miss with mixing ram. I guess I got lucky. :)

You literally didn't cover the question in the title... can you mismatch the capacity, if you keep speed the same, does that effect anything?

Learn a lot of things from this video, but the highlight is now I know for sure how Australian English accent sounds, kinda sound like British but more decipherable 😂

Really useful video! But there's another question unsolved, maybe less important: can you mix RAM stick with same speed, of the same brand, BUT having different sizes?

💻 I have a question! My laptop currently has 8GB RAM, 3200MHz, DDR4, and I'm looking to upgrade. Can I buy a 16GB RAM stick and combine it with my existing one to make it 24GB RAM (same frequency and MHz)? Is this okay? If anyone knows, please let me know! 🙏✨

Did I just completely miss it or did they not even cover what is in the title of the video..
Kinda goes to show if you have this many people in the comments asking you the same question in the title that you didn't really answer the question

why do you think people are looking for RAM and assume they already have enough?

great job putting a question as the literal title then proceeding to not even mention it once lmao

so what you're saying is,
I could go through the hassle of finding compatible sticks, OR
I could just buy a new kit and sell my old stick

If I have two RAM sticks of the same make, same technical specs and speed, but one is 16GB and the other 32GB, will it be a detriment to performance.
