Avenged sevenfold is such a great band. Every single member is an excellent musician. They get the love and praise from fans that they deserve but one thing that's always stuck out to me is I don't think they get enough credit as far as song writing goes. They get recognized individually for the amazing players they are but when they get into the studio they are world class song writers in my opinion. The self titled record (white album) is a masters class on how to play heavy music while still being extremely melodic, catchy, and fun. Gates is a great example for guitar players, he shows that you can shred all over an entire album but without overplaying anything. Every note/lick/phrase he plays serves the songs. No solo is to long or short. For a young shredder hotshot (at that time) Gates playing was very mature and formulated to build on the song. No show boating or showing off
