The Origin of Satan - Professor Elaine Pagels

Показать описание
From the religious historian whose The Gnostic Gospels won both the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award comes a dramatic interpretation of Satan and his role on the Christian tradition. With magisterial learning and the elan of a born storyteller, Pagels turns Satan’s story into an audacious exploration of Christianity’s shadow side, in which the gospel of love gives way to irrational hatreds that continue to haunt Christians and non-Christians alike.

I read Pagels’ book on gnostic texts around the time that The DaVinci Code blew up and I was an undergrad in biblical history at a fundamentalist Christian college. Her book blew my mind and was another stop in my escape from that world and into the rich world of comparative mythology.

Dr. Pagels is one of my favorite scholars. I love her works. I read her "The Gnostic Gospels" when I was at an important crossroads in my late 20's. All I have to say, it helped me.

The interviewer is very respectful and pleasant and lets his guests talk unlike other interviewers who do more talking than their guests.

The Origin of Satan was one of the best text books from all my religious studies classes. We had a “biography of Satan” class.
Big fan. Thank you Dr. Pagels.

Funny how things get together. I was raised in a Christian home, my father was a sceptical theologist, a lutheran vicar, he twice did a doctorate. I became a Buddhist and suddenly after a few years of meditating and following Jewish influences, and when I read Prof. Elaine Pagels' book about the Nag Hamadi gospels, it all fell into place. I tried hard to learn her book by heart. At least I managed with the quotes about Miryam, the consort of Jesus.

As an American African, I really enjoyed this question-and-answering period with renowned scholar Elaine Pagel. Strange that I used to work in a library and I would see her books. But never had the heart to read them. Then I retired and a friend showed me a wall full of books and there was Elaine Pagel's book: Beyond Belief. I just started reading it and I must say it has a lot of answers to questions I held onto for years. I must say thank you, Derek. I listen to many of your YouTube interviews, especially Bart Ehrman and James Tabor. Wonderful interview.

FOUND OUT THIS CHANEL YESTERDAY! SO EXITED AND HAPPY! I WAS IN SCIENTOLOGY CULT FOR 5 YEARS IN Kazakhstan 🇰🇿, was in Islamic cult, was in sufizm cult. These videos helps me to make sure myself that I made a right decision by leaving all kinds of religion. Thanks for your channel 👍

I was hooked on Pagels with The Gnostic Gospels. Opened my eyes and mind. The Gospel of Thomas is gold.

When I read the gospel of Thomas, everything came together and finally made sense to me.

When I was young, 8 decades ago, I was a devout christian, family went to church every Sunday. On the occasional winter day when it snowed, I would organize a church service for my younger brother and sister. I read the Bible cover-cover with a flashlight, under my covers to allow me to read, whereas my parents demanded I turn off the lights and sleep. As an adolescent, I began to meditate while driving tractor, or stop for a while to wander down to the creek and lie in the tall grass and drift with the clouds. As a young adult I attended a Christian college where some doubt was cast about Jesus that created a desire to know the original teachings of Jesus. One day while I was writing an assignment on the blackboard for my students, poetry began to flow as I wrote. My students asked if they were supposed to copy the poem. I told them they could if they wished, but I was going to. That happened again and again. Half a century later I discovered in writing a memoir, my poetry was a Gnostic Christianity that echoed early Christian writers of the 1st & 2nd century. They seemed to be similar to the original teachings of Jesus--an answer to my prayer

Absolutely mesmerizing woman! This goes down as one of my fave interviews. So knowledgeable, personable and speaks in plain language - you HAVE to interview her again! I saw she wrote about the Apocalypse. Would love to hear her on that topic. Thanks, Derek!
