If you followed the launch of the ps3 you might remember seeing this strange looking device being unveiled in 2005 by sony.
This was the ps3 boomerang controller. In this video we'll look at what it was and why it failed. Please do subscribe if you haven't already, it really helps this small channel grow.

The PS3 Boomerang controller featured a unique, curved design that was intended to be more comfortable and ergonomic for gamers to use. The controller had a shape similar to a boomerang, with a large central curve that fit comfortably in the player's palm. The design was intended to reduce hand fatigue and make the controller more comfortable to hold during long gaming sessions.

The Boomerang controller also featured a number of advanced features, including motion sensors and wireless connectivity. The motion sensors allowed players to control games using physical movements, similar to the Wii Remote controller for the Nintendo Wii.

Despite the advanced features of the Boomerang controller, however, it faced a number of technical challenges that ultimately led to its failure. One major issue was the lack of normal analogue sticks on the controller, it had shortened down PSP style sticks. These made it difficult to play certain types of games that required precise control. Additionally, the controller's curved design made it difficult to package and ship, and it was more expensive to manufacture than traditional controllers. Beyond these issues, it also faced widespread criticism for the bizarre design from fans. Despite Sony's initial plans to release the Boomerang controller with the PlayStation 3, the company eventually scrapped the design in response to the negative feedback. Instead, Sony released a redesigned controller called the DualShock 3, which featured a more traditional design with two regular analogue sticks, a D-pad, and four face buttons.

Ultimately, the PS3 Boomerang controller was a failed experiment in game controller design. While it introduced a number of innovative features that would later be incorporated into other game controllers, its unusual design ultimately proved too problematic for gamers and developers alike.

Would you have wanted Sony to release these controllers?

I remember my school did a giveaway. If I remember correctly one of the wins was. A curved controller. We literally had a unreleased piece of tech as a winning prize

The dualsense for PS5 seems to have a lot of the same design features as the boomerang controller mainly the curved grips and motion controls, maybe the boomerang would have been a success if sony had stuck with it despite the negative feedback, it would be cool if they did an updated re-release of the boomerang controller like microsoft did for the xbox's original duke controller.

Was scrapped for the Sixaxis controller. They initially removed rumble due to battery life concerns.
