Also, don't use limestone rocks for this purpose. The heat from the fire will turn them in to calcium oxide (quicklime), wich in contact with water will create calcium hydroxide (slaked lime). This will make the water bitter and extremely dangerous to drink, since it will raise a lot it's pH.

As others have said, never put wet rocks in a fire. I would like to add only that even rocks that are just close to water, like those near a river bank, may contain enough water to cause them to explode in the fire. Make sure the rocks are dry, and you’ll be alright. Best luck and God bless!

Excellent idea. Dysentery (from bacteria in untreated water) will lead to severe dehydration, making you lose more water than if you hadn't drunk any water at all.
