Just a thought: with black yarn, crochet the corners shut. About an 1/2" or so from the strap. Then center the zipper, tucking the ends under where you added the 1/2" section of crochet.

I really like the tote bag made from the granny squares. And it wasn't cheating that you used the granny squares. You made them your self, but only earlier in a previous video😉.
