Why Did Jesus Send 70 Disciples?

How do the 70 (or 72) disciples, sent out by Jesus, point to the worldwide mission of the church? What is the symbolism of wiping the dust from one’s feet? How is language about the fall of the King of Babylon applied to Capernaum? How did Sodom’s grotesque breach of hospitality apply to other cities? Which Jewish literature uses “lambs in the midst of wolves” to describe God’s people surrounded by the 70 wolfish nations of the world? In this week’s “Reading the Gospels through Hebrew Eyes,” Chad Bird takes us through Luke 10:1-20 to see how the Old Testament aids our understanding of the mission of Christ’s disciples.

Excellent deep dive, Chad. The Essene connections further underscore Jesus as King, Priest and Prophet of the Order of Melchizedek forever. Glory to God for this teaching. Thank you, brother. PS, I was blessed to be the 70th like for this video!

Blessings brother Chad. I have taken theology courses yet I find it very insightful and helpful in my growth how you present each class. This one in particular has answered some of my questions. Thank you and I hope that you continue teaching through your ministry. I believe that many people can learn and grow through your simple yet profound teaching of the scriptures.

Yes, there was a lot of teaching that can lead to wisdom in it. It. My favorite part was when you mentioned the double negative in Greek. But that just may be because I'm weird. Thank you

Hi Chad, Brother I love your teachings and how you take that deep dive into them.

But this is a question I have for some time that I haven't heard anyone answer yet.
The lost tribes, which I understand to be the House of Israel, the ten tribes to the north were long gone by the time Jesus comes onto the stage of history.
And as they are described in the book of Hosea they were to be scattered, not having obtained mercy, and not recognized as God's people according to the names of the children by Hosea and Gomer.
So when Jesus sends out the twelve to the "lost sheep of the house of Israel" is He literally sending them to the lost tribes or to the Jews who have not yet believed in Jesus, that are of the whole house of Israel?
I believe Jesus knew where the lost tribes were even though they were scattered, but didn't they ultimately lose their own identity and not remember who they were?
And my other question is, I believe history reveals to us that James' letter went to the churches in Rome but he addressed his letter to the "twelve tribes which are scattered abroad", so again if they were supposed to fit the description in Hosea how could he have know where they were excluding the House of Judah of course?
And as long as I have your attention or if I have your attention, can you tell me if Paul's letter to the Romans was a rebuttal to James' letter?
Plus I was happy to get like number " 72 " above! 👍😇

Thank you Chad! these videos are ALWAYS helpful for our devotionals and preparing for the upcoming Divine Service and pericopes. Quick question - does the Luke 10:18 verse " I was seeing Satan fall..." have any (additional) parallel reference to Rev. 12:7 ? - Just curious. Thank you again for sharing your gifts here. The peace of Christ be with you and your family.

When God uses numerical numbers it doesn't mean confusion Rather it's interconnected to all His Perfection.

What was this urgent message that the 70 were teaching? Now after someone is answered that question and they feel confident that I like to ask one more question. But please don't cheat but rather read why the 70 were sent and what they were told to teach. Now I want to ask a question about the 12 apostles. What were they told to go and teach after the crucifixion and Resurrection?
