How Powerful Was The Balrog?

As the Rings of Power recently teased, there were in fact more than one Balrog. Although bearing almost no resemblance, the balrog were in fact very similar in nature to Sauron, Gandalf and the other wizards. The balrog were Maer, angelic beings created by the Lord of the rings God, Eru Iluvitar. Like Sauron, the Balrog joined Morgoth in his quest against Eru Iluvitar. These beings of fire were in some ways more powerful than Sauron, at least when it came to physical size and strength. However, not all Maear are created equal and it can be assumed that through his deception and cleverness, Sauron was undoubtedly more powerful

Indeed there were more than one Balrog, it seems Rings of Power didn't tease that, as the one we see in season one is verly likely the one we see in the Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring.

How I suddenly shut down my brain whenever "Rings of Power" is being refered to any kind of lore xD

I already caught on to there not being just one Balrog in The Fellowship of the Ring?? Like, Gandalfs explicitly says "a Balrog" not "the Balrog" which kinda implies that this isn't the only one

Fun fact: at one point, Tolkien toyed with the idea of there having been an entire army of Balrogs, but came to the understanding that if that had been the case, then Morgoth's victory over the elves and men of Balerion would've been stupidly easy. So, he toyed with the numbers for a bit before eventually settling on there having been no less than three, and no more than seven.

Crazy all the Balrogs were with Morgoth since day 1 since the Discord. They would have known Sauron very well.

There were many Balrogs yes, but the Balrog in ROP and LOTR: TFOTR is the same. Its the same Balrog of Moria

Pyshicall strength in Tolkiens works is not that significant compared to divine power, Sauron being more gifted in divine powers can also be stronger or bigger than Balrogs if he ever wishes. Sauron is also stated to be the most powerfull of the servants of Melkor… so yeah

To correct that it hasnt just been teased it was mentioned in the silmarillion around 40 years or so before rings of power

I wish you had gone into more detail about the fate of the Balrogs and who for sure has destroyed them. Most Balrogs pulled their adversaries to doom with them, as with Gandalf, Glorfindel, and eventually Lord Ecthelion with Gothmog; although it's likely that Ecthelion killed two balrogs before Gothmog. It is also said that Tuor killed at least one (probably two) balrog(s), and his being a mere mortal shows both the might of 1st age warriors, and the disparity in power between the least and greatest of the balrogs.

I’m sure the rings of power will say the balrog were just misunderstood

Durin’s Bane for instance is just slightly lesser than the power of Gandalf only because Gandalf has knowledge on his side and knows full-well what the Balrog is capable of and what it uses for weapons. Gandalf was quick to underestimate Durin’s Bane when he broke the bridge and sent the demon downwards. That was a mistake he had to pay for with his own life in the final battle between the two. Without underestimating the Balrog Gandalf could have at least thwarted the demon without actually having to kill it in Jackson’s Movies

"As RoP teased, there was more than one Balrog" - Someone whose never read a Tolkien book (which very clearly states there were multiple)

There should be atleast thousands of them considering the fact that they were like Morgoth's personal guards (they came to rescue him from Ungoliant), the Dragons being Morgoth's air support, and the Orcs and Wolves being the footsoldiers all in the wars of the First Age.

Refering to the Rings of Power immediately disqualifies any argument

The one you see in rings of power IS the balrog, its name is Durins Bane. Because, well, it kills durin. Sorry for the spoilers if you hadn't worked that one out already guys 😂

Strength in numbers
Also I'm going with Balrog every time because of those sick style points
