Most of the date pits that we plant will be male. The ratio between male and female is not 50:50. I've planted hundreds and hundreds of palms from seed and I have many mature palms now, 30 years on. All of the female palms that are mature have delicious dates, they do vary, but I can say that they are all very tasty. The seeds are from various different ancient varieties grown here in Spain. Some of seeds are from trees that are more than 800 years old.

I am sooo glad I watched this video. I was about to do exactly what you described, but a little voice told me to check youtube first. I owed you five years of my life!

I don't care much about the chances, dates seedlings are not sold in Brazil so I will plant it from seed. I heard 1 in 10 tastes as good as the original one so maybe I will be lucky.

Thanks for letting people have an idea of the actual planting of date. If its pretty, i would love have one outside my house. Dates or not, i just take it as is.

Thanks for the video. I saved a lot of pits from dates I had eaten in the last few years. Like everyone, we go to Youtube for advice. Imagine my shock, five years to go before you can find out whether you have a male or female plant. I just turned 71 on May 20 a few weeks. I think I am going to give those pits to someone else. Thanks, Pamela

So informative! I saved a bunch of date pits recently. I’m still going to plant them, but I am glad I watched this first. Now I know what to expect. Also, you are beautiful!!

I’m glad I watched this. I am specifically growing them for the look and if the palm grows dates then that would be great but just a bonus.

Favorite dates to consume by far is Ajwa Dates ... so nice and chewy, can't have enough

Glad your video came up. There is a time lapse video about growing a date palm from seed giving the impression you can just grow your own date palm. None of what you just said is mentioned. Thanks

I just planted a random date seed for the plant itself! It sprouted. Got very lucky. I have no idea the gender. But I love it regardless just as a plant.

Thanks for this.
Burried some seeds in a pot weeks ago, just for fun, but they grew.
At least now I know not to have my hopes way up there but I'm keeping my babies, till I can plant them somewhere. Thanks again

I dont have any choice as i cant find any good date palm cuttings so i will take my chances with seeds. And there are videos that claim that young date palms can be identified between male and female

There’s also the chance of getting a new variety that makes a even sweeter fruit 🤷🏻‍♂️ there’s always a gamble in everything. Better to start now than think about it and wait 5 years to start and waste 5 years thinking about it. So anyone that wants to grow them do it now and don’t think about it. Just do it cause we only live so long and by the time you know it we’ll be dead and only thought about growing a Mejool palm and this lady telling you not to. 😒

Amazing. My grandmother used to buy date squares. These days I love Medjool dates. I always wondered how they were grown. Thanks for posting.

Seed saving is more involved than some folk think. I do not buy from private sellers any more. I have in the past and after nurturing the seeds into plants, the time frame, etc., The fruit were something other than what I thought I was growing. In fact the last pkt of pumpkin seeds I grew were un-eatable. I gave the pkt of seeds two years, never got one pumpkin to eat. That pkt. was from a huge seed selling outlet. Going to try plants this year.

Have you tasted degla date. It is the rarest date and only grow in Algeria.

It is the sweetest and transparent that you can even see the seed inside.
