Germany: "You can't do that, if you do we'll take it out on POW's"
America: "Don't you guys use flamethrowers?"
Germany: "Listen. Let's calm down and be reasonable."

Trench clubs came into use not because guns are loud (shots will be fired no matter what), but because rifles are incredibly unwieldy fighting enemies in the same trench- especially with a bayonet attached. And you absolutely need to have melee capabilities quickly accessible in close quarters combat. Another favorite choice was using your standard issue entrenching tool (Shovel), usually sharpened and used like a makeshift Ax.

Imagine not knowing what a tank is and going into battle with an almost unknown enemy, well that’s how it was in ww1

I like how a spiked club is not issue but they had problems with the shotgun

Italy Pilot: "This may sound crazy, but hear me out...so I was playing lawn darts the other day, and to make a long story short: I'm not on good terms with the misses on account of me impaling a lawn dart into her dad's head, but I have an idea when it comes to dealing with ground troops."

The shotgun was the Winchester 1897. What made this and many other old shotguns great was that there is no trigger disconnect. This would allow you to keep the trigger held down and it will fire as fast as you can pump it. It was great for clearing trenches in a matter of seconds.

I own the successor of the Winchester 1987, the model 1912. Same concept with updated mechanisms. Two of the best made American shotguns in history along with the Ithaca model 37 (Also no trigger disconnect). The process of shooting a shotgun as quickly as you can pump it without releasing the trigger is called “slam fire”.

Actually the reason why items like trench clubs, shovels, trench knives etc were brought into trenches during night raids were because trenches were too narrow for rifles especially with their bayonets equipped. Basically you can’t use a spear in an enclosed area.

4:45 Imagine using a model 1987 in 1914, truly ahead of its time.

The darksouls reference kinda brings home the brutality. Well played

Gotta love how during a war when toxic gas was used regularly but nations looked at shotguns and serrated bayonets and were like; “Nah, those are too brutal.” 😂

A weapon is only obsolete if it doesn't work.

Germany: heavily utilizes chemical weapons
Americans: shotguns for raiding your trenches!
Germany: Hey, no fair! Unnecessary suffering!

Seriously though, the ww1 trench shotgun is still my favorite shotgun design of all time. There's just something so classic about the modifications. Definitely on my list of things to build when I'm done being broke.

If I'm not mistaken, the allies forced Germany to stop using serrated bayonets. And Similarly to how they got banned, I think it was the medics who brought up the issue of Shotguns. Buckshot were very hard to treat, still are.

those aerial darts actually make a lot of sense to me. almost like a gun that fires down on infantry

The armies also used long metal tubes full of explosive powder that, when applied pressure to, exploded, releasing a small metal projectile at a speed similar to that of sound, which would apply great force to whatever it hit, especially at a close distance.

Rifles with a water can with a small hole in it attached via string to the trigger of a rifle would make your gun fire well after you retreated out of your trench. Used by the ANZAC forced in Gallipoli. Saved a lot of lives.
