Linux is an open source, highly customizable OS, and it has been called the backbone of the internet. It is the number 1 choice of operating system for servers around the world, the linux kernel is used in Android for over 2 billion devices, many modern cars rely on linux, as do smart devices, and even the International Space Station.

But is it the right OS for you?
There are many different versions of Linux, called Distros, and in this video we will go over 5 popular OSs and their use cases.

Masses of people are moving away from mainstream operating systems that capture heaps of data about you, and towards more private systems like many of those based on Linux. If you’re getting your feet wet for the first time, be sure to check out our upcoming Ubuntu tutorial!

Linux is so stable and is getting mainstream that I wish more users would adopt to using it.

It's great to see Linux getting more attention over the last few years, the desktop experience has come so far, my personal favourites are Arch and Fedora, they're not for anyone brand new to LInux because they need a little configuring, especially Arch, but they both have very upto date kernels and software available in their repositories, they run very smoothly and fast, they need a little bit of tweaking if you want to game too but the documentation on the internet is huge for them so it's not that difficult to find solutions for any problems.

I've been switching from Windows to Linux since the beginnings of 2022. Started with Pop!_OS and later switched to Mint Cinnamon, which I found to be the more mature OS. I still dual boot, nowdays I find myself using Linux way more on my daily tasks.

It's been right for me as my exclusive desktop OS since 2000.

I've switched to a Fedora-based Spin called Nobara about a month ago, and besides some small nitpicks like the lack of a port of NVIDIA Broadcast, it has been absolutely fantastic! Feels great not having to use Windows. Might even format that drive soon so I have more storage available again. 🐧❤

Great video. I returned to Linux after many many years away from it. Glad I did. There’s a learning curve but it’s rewarding in the end

A couple of other things to note. Linux Mint has two bases for their distro. A Debian based version (LMDE), and an Ubuntu based version. Also, the Ubuntu based version removes a lot of the Ubuntu base features that some find "objectionable" such as snaps. You can add them if you wish, but they don't come installed. Thus Linux Mint is usually lighter than Ubuntu itself. Great info here.

This is a perfect short video for those that want to get an idea of what the Linux is, why it is even a thing and what is so cool about it.

I love your work and your approach to your work!! A thousand and one likes! 👍👍
p.s. the first paragraph could be the description to this video :D

Just a little correction, proprietary drivers are only needed for Nvidia, not AMD.
AMD has open source drivers that are better than the proprietary ones.

I've been running Linux since the early 2000s and I was a little worried to see Qubes show up in an introduction to Linux video, but you covered it exceedingly well! I'm really impressed by how well you covered everything here! Truly a step above many other videos out there! Thanks for your hard work in putting this video together and thanks for spreading the word about Linux!

This was a really great overview. The one thing you might want to add is on the downside: if you are strongly invested in particular software for Windows/Mac (e.g. Adobe apps, Final Cut, MS Office...), then you may find the switch hard work – you'll need to find and learn open source alternatives that work on Linux. This can be a good thing because the alternative will offer you freedom, but there will be a learning curve and you have to be ready for this. This said, personally, I now mainly use Linux for everything, and love it as an operating system, and I love the range of software available for it – I've never enjoyed using a computer as much. My recommendation is that it is worth the work in making the switch, but you should still expect to have to put in a little time and effort to do so!

I'm really glad this video was made. The way you talk about privacy is a good mixture of not coming on too strong (me) but also saying something about it. If this becomes more popular though, I hope you will talk more about privacy among others things.

Edit: oh and another thing I thought for sure you would talk about was the FSF and their several utilities, but I suppose that is not as important.

This was an unexpectedly good intro for novices. I'm not a novice, but it doesn't hurt to watch, learnt about a couple of new distros (there are always new distros). Subscribed. Personally, I currently use Mint (Cinnamon), but have used a heap of distros. I love debian but getting it to work with wifi is a nightmare. My favourite distro was Slackware, it was just so easy to maintain. One thing you didn't mention is that Linux is probably the ideal environment to do software development.
