6k vs 4k Which should you use?

It's great that the Lumix S5ii gives us the option to film in 6k resolution, but does that mean we should? What do you think?...
Hopefully, this 6k vs 4k comparison for video will help you decide whether it's worth it.

I remember when 4K really started kicking off, I'd record in 4K and down squeeze it into 1080p timeline. Which made the image just a little more crispy. I now film in 6k and down squeeze it into 4K timeline. It definitely isn't as much of a jump as before, but I find that I notice a little more detail and I shoot in open gate on my GH6. So I have extra room to work with.

the only 6k that is practical is 3:2 open gate format so we can crop into 19:6 & 9:16 without losing 4k pixels. Vertical videos are here to stay regardless anyone's opinion towards them.

Brilliant. I wasn’t too fussed about 6k until I wrapped my head around just how much bigger it is. Certainly lots of scope for punching in and recomposing!

I really appreciate the time and effort which went into this video. It really shows in the humour and details. Love your content. Keep it coming!

Great video Sam. You made a big effort to create the video inside the phone screen to explain benefit of 6k re cropping. You make it very easy for me to understand the benefit. Thankyou.

Nice video as always! 😃 As an amateur wildlife videographer, an affordable 6k is a little dream: things happens only once so cropping is a huge advantage and I can have 2 different angles of view with just one camera (that's why I use a lot the 6k photo on the Panasonic g9). Also, I'm a solo shooter so during a documentary is really nice to being able to crop a little bit in post just to make things more dynamic! But, in the end, Italian tv is still 1920x1080 so even the 4k is big enough

As a visual effects artist, I think 6K should be reserved for VFX shots and green screen shots. Most movies you see in theaters were shown in 2K for many years. Only a handful are shown in 4K today. There is no such thing as "future proofing" yourself by being able to shoot in 6K or 8K. Don't let content creators fool you into thinking you need high resolutions. You don't.

You are just making me want to buy that camera so badly. I am looking for a nice affordable camera that I can still take on to travel easily. Man I know what to save my money for.

Sam! This edit is just remarkable. Smooth as butter. Love the jacket sequence & and the over-acting in B-roll always kills me lol. Definitely tryna get more like you this year!!

I use 6K a lot with the S1, very nice for cropping and also for the full 3:2 look. I prefer to use the S5 but I really like the 6K on my S1. Now the S5II has 6K, better IBIS and Phase detect AF, I don't need the S1 anymore.
So true about the colors, I really like what I've seen from your videos, the GH6 and the S5II have the best colors, can't wait to receive this S5 II.

Editors will prefer 6k over 4k for cropping/frame headroom, stabilizing (does crop), transition effects etc in a 4k composition. Larger resolution is welcome for multiplatform editing, 3:2 6k open gate footage in vertical composition for social media platforms that use vertical video. However, 8k would give you more headroom so people might skip 6k and upgrade when 8k cameras arrive.

That Lumix S5II is looking like a beast of a camera with the 6k video! Perfect for shooting mixed content. Definitely the one to buy atm! Great video Sam!

Wow. I literally just shot a video talking about this exact subject. Thanks so much for sharing, I am in alignment with what you're saying. :-)

TOP TIP. Add some "cinema" grain from Red Giant, for example, and even when youtube compresses your video you won't see as much banding. Banding is generally about bit rate. 6k benefits include being able to stand up to heavier color grading without crashing the image. You won't see a massive file size difference until you start shooting RAW; great files but massive.

Nice socks.
I couldn’t tell a difference at all with those two apart from the 6k looked a bit brighter.
We’ve come a long way on YouTube since 240p haven’t we 😂
Hopefully we will get to a future where nothings compressed.
Really great video explaining stuff well yet again, and shot really great.
You’ve learned well young Padawan.

Yh immediately I could see the difference between 4k and 6k even through YouTube compression, 6k is sharper, however doesn't make 4k useless if I had to s5ii I'd still be shooting 4k or even 1080p most of the time because of file sizes

Thanks Sam - great info as usual.
But I don't really see the advantage of open gate. If you have to film a object and it needs to be in frame from top to bottom, that object will need to be within your 16:9 frame markers and 9:16 frame markers, so you may as well shoot landscape (16:9) with portrait markers (9:16). Its to difficult to judge from the open gate ratio.
😆 Hope that makes sense.

Amazing video as always Sam! Can’t wait for the next one!

Pro-tip, if you add slight noise to the image in static areas(I'll sometimes add it to only the blue channel), Youtube's compression won't give you that same banding
