Being from New England there’s a trick most don’t know, at first it sounds weird, but on ice and snow if you start to skid. There’s a way to stop the skid besides slowing down. Put the car in neutral. It makes the vehicle like dead weight. You will instantly regain steering to correct where you are on the road. Then back to drive gear. Best thing is to think about it in advance before you drive so your prepared. Typically it’s one notch forward from drive to neutral.There may be skeptics but have you tried what I’m saying on ice or snow while skidding? The wheels in gear can actually make the situation worse and force you off the road, especially at speed. No matter if in 4wd, all wheel drive, 2 wheel drive. A tow truck driver in New Hampshire taught me this many years ago and I’ve used it when needed. The reason he shared it with me. A lady who lived in a house where she and I rented was on a mountain. So after a ice storm with about an inch of snow on top. The lady needing to go somewhere skid off the road in 4wd low, in her truck. The tow guy came and got it back on the driveway but said he can’t drive it anywhere. The lady was to scared to drive it the rest of the way down so I volunteered. That’s when he told me put it in neutral and use your brake. I went down the steep icy driveway straight as an arrow.

Yeah the yahoos aren't listening. Had to take daughter to dialysis early today and apparently people think your 5 second or more distance between the car in front of you is an invitation to pull in at high rates of speed then down on their brakes because the car in front of driving safely and going slower than normal for to the conditions.
