Just amazing help.  No one locally could help with the problem of windows updates not installing.  I just did the three steps in your video then tried to install the 7 security updates on my Vista 9 laptop.  I was so surprised that they all installed -after weeks and weeks of getting nowhere.  Thanks so much!

this video was very helpful --- just one step missing, which I came across while watching a similar video on the same problem:   while under "Services" - then "Background Int Transfer Service", check under the tab "Dependencies" for "RPC".  If it shows up there go back to the main Services list - click on Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and make sure it is on "automatic".  Mine was on manual and that turned out to be the missing piece of the puzzle.   Windows Update works like a charm now.  :)

Thanks TKMB. After repeated passes through the MS web site with no success, I was able to shake the problem by following your video. Going out and downloading latest updater agent myself, instead of letting Vista attempt it, was the key. 48 updates later, I seem to be in good shape, and am executing a full scan, per you suggestion. Also thanks to google for finding your video. As for MS, they would be better off if they consulted with you on how to make solutions accessible to the users.
